@NolanAnalyst @patrickhwillems knows what’s up youtu.be/ZStkUxC4iL4 I do think you can have vibes AND a solvable puzzle, and if you have to tell your audience how to experience something as a filmmaker that’s a bit of an L, as the film should ideally be doing that for you.

Christopher Nolan says TENET is "not all comprehensible" but you're "slightly missing the point" if you think his movies are just puzzles to be solved. “If you are experiencing my film, then you are getting it. I feel like where people have experienced frustrations with my narratives in the past is sometimes I think they are slightly missing the point. It’s not a puzzle to be unpacked but an experience to be had, preferably in a movie theater but also at home...You’re not meant to understand everything in ‘Tenet.' It’s not all comprehensible.”

True. LLMs are not based on any new science of intelligence. They just exploit a science that has been around for centuries. Linguists have known for a very long time that the semantic and grammatical embeddings of words in any language are highly statistical. But intelligence does not come from the stats. It's the other way around. John Rupert Firth wrote: "You shall know a word by the company it keeps." Statistically speaking, this is true but not always. Negations and other logic modifiers can become pesky flies in the LLM ointment. The LLM-to-AGI mafia have exploited the stats of word embeddings to make wild claims about the imminent arrival of AGI. Don't believe it. True intelligence is deterministic and causal, not probabilistic and correlational. AGI will never come from LLMs.

LLMs prove one thing and a one thing only - that all that writing can be used to construct an empirical estimate of conditional probability distribution of next word conditioned on preceding text & that samples generated from this distribution can sometimes be useful.Nothing more

OK, here's a fresh entertaining story from Lithuania, because we all need a good laugh for the sake of sanity. An anonymous troll tricked a member of Parliament to believe that he was going to dine with Musk 😂 I swear, this plan is on par with the exploding pagers. Read on...🧵

Memo to Ukraine supporters (of which I'm one): Sometimes your own guy can make a mistake. 1. Trump was upbeat about signing a deal, and even when Zelensky called Putin a "killer" and a "terrorist," Trump barely reacted.

We should worry about 'mission-driven' procurement, which in isolation would be a step backwards. Quick 🧵on why this kind of 'everythingism' in procurement is so dangerous.

Fantastic to see @xkcd and @standupmaths on stage at the Theatre Royal talking about What If. Delighted that my favourite question, about Yoda's power output, got a mention at the end!

@DrAlanWager In @douglasadams’ Meaning of Liff Zeal Monachorum (n.) is defined as when skiing to descend the top three quarters of the mountain in a quivering blue funk, but on arriving at the gentle bit just in front of the restaurant to whizz to a stop like a victorious slalom-champion.
