SRSG on Violence Against Children Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid met with European Commissioner @RoxanaMinzatu to discuss strengthening protection for every child in Europe. The EU Child Guarantee, together with the European Social Guarantee, plays a key role in ensuring the protection and well-being of all children across the EU. Strengthening integrated social and child protection services as well as cross sectoral budgeting has a high return on investment. #EndViolence #EU

Joint Statement by @childreninwar, and @UN_EndViolence, on the escalating military operations in Iran and the region. The rapidly escalating military operations in Iran and the region are devastating and present a serious threat to children. We are deeply alarmed by attacks on civilians, including civilian infrastructures, schools, and hospitals. Schools and hospitals must not be attacked. We join the call of the Secretary-General for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Maximum restraint is imperative, and full compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law must be ensured at all times by all parties. Children always pay the highest price in wars they did not choose. Every child in the region - and around the world - has the right to live free from fear, with their protection and rights upheld as a primary consideration.

The U.N. human rights office publicly defended Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese after at least four European governments attacked her and called for her resignation over comments she never made. Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Albanese “did not characterize any state as an enemy of humanity. I invite you all to go see her remarks.” Hurtado added the office is “very worried” about escalating “personal attacks, threats and misinformation” targeting U.N. officials and independent experts, warning such campaigns distract from “serious human rights issues.” She then pointed to ongoing Israeli ceasefire violations in Gaza, the daily killing of Palestinians, and Israel’s failure to meet its obligations as an occupying power in the West Bank while undermining a two-state solution: “This is what we should be talking about.” @FranceskAlbs | @UNHumanRights

Female genital mutilation violates the universal human rights to life, health, and bodily integrity and causes lasting harm to over 230 million women and girls worldwide. It is rooted in the same gender bias that restricts girls’ access to education, narrows women’s opportunities for employment, and limits their participation in public life. On this International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, let us renew our promise to protect the rights of women and girls everywhere and ensure that they can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can end this injustice once and for all. #EndFGM #ZeroTolerance #Invest2EndFGM #ForEveryChild @UNFPA
