there are genuinely 2 internets right now 1. where AGI is basically here, codebases write themselves, agents run entire workflows, and every founder is talking about their 10x productivity gains 2. where a real customer, paying real money, takes a photo of their laptop screen with their phone to share something the hype wave we all live in makes it feel like everything has changed, and in some ways it has but here's the thing nobody says out loud: roughly 85% of the world has never even opened ChatGPT - not even once we're having a civilizational debate about superintelligence while most people are just trying to figure out basic software both realities are true at the same time the gap between them is just a lot wider than the timeline makes it seem

Who should stay depends on some combination of "who can win?" and "who can push the envelope without pushing it to a purity politics pissing contest?" Mainstreet said Elliott, Black, Findlay and Milobar would lead the NDP in a general, but only Milobar would result in a clear Conservative majority.

@IonaItalia Yeah, the best way to get along is for me to stay the hell out of our kitchen until it's time to wash dishes.

In honour of the Junos, this is one the best things I've ever read about anything. Six years ago, VICE got a British music critic to utterly shred the entire history of the awards. vice.com/en/article/i-l…

Interesting weekend, between the race/gender/class war discourse of the NDP convention, and this, which might be called generation/class war discourse of the new right. This version of what's available now seems more realistic and constructive of the two. I'm not excited about either, but some things have to change in this country. It appears that we (and the world) are undergoing a left/right realignment, the nature and outcome of which is evolving and hard to predict. I hope we can get though this without destroying ourselves.

The Supreme Court spent last week hearing potentially one of the most important cases in its history. If, as a myriad of progressive activists and the federal Liberal government want, the Court invents new limits on Sec 33 with absolutely no basis in the text or history, it will be completely upending our constitutional order and creating a massive political earthquake that we do not need. Please, Justices of the Supreme Court, please don't do something stupid, leave Sec 33 alone.

@michaeltaube For all his faults, at least Eby appears to have had enough sense to stay away from the coronation, or at least the stage.

Share a bit. I don’t want to belittle the category of software. People did amazing work in the world of payroll software (agile manifest etc). But at some point a csv is created and it has a row per payee and it happens twice a week. Shopify pays out millions of businesses and moves billions a day. And we took 20m of financing ever before we went public (and had it all still in the bank when we did). The scale of nonsense that’s happening with government bespoke software is just unexplainable without fraudulent intent. But it also tracks with everything else you hear about government efficiency (minus maybe military). It’s not that it costs 10b to make a payroll software that is the problem. It’s that it costs this much for anything that the government tries to do itself. The only conclusion is that the government needs to do a lot less.

@howardanglin Wow. I'd only been paying half attention and had thought that Ashton was the rational choice in that lot. But he's clearly just as nuts as some of the others.

@MikePMoffatt @tylermeredith Well said. Vancouver Centre is not going NDP. Ever. (Unless boundaries change). He wasn’t able to get a safer or more likely riding in which to run. My prediction is Don Davies “gives” him Vancouver Kingsway next election or bielection. And he might not even win that.

I’ve heard this claim before - that Avi Lewis “isn’t a politician” It’s kinda funny. He’s actually run as an NDP candidate 2x before (in 2021 and 2025 elections) — and come third both times. He’s also a legacy NDPer. He’s a politician. He just doesn’t want you to think that.
