@yimbymelbourne The classic Australian way of creating thriving industries out of public system dysfunction while getting peak bodies to hold the problem in place 🙃

The Planning Institute of Australia's response to YIMBY Melbourne's research demonstrates exactly why our planning system is broken. We never said that there are too many planners. We said that the sector's productivity has collapsed. 👇

@AvidCommentator This plan makes no sense, what problem is this trying to solve? Banks are only going to approve people who can afford principal and interest after the 5 years, it’s too big a risk otherwise…so wouldn’t we just giving money to people who would be approved/can afford it anyway?

@dieworkwear If the aim is to move away from the volume of fast fashion currently consumed, then wouldn’t it make more sense to impose tariffs on particular products rather than on literally everything? Trying to repackage these tariffs as environmentalism feels like a desperate reach aye

@ClareONeilMP Need to compel councils to get out of the way of implementing flex housing policy. The demand is there, your approach will increase supply, but the policy framework of many councils stops everything dead in its tracks. Looking at you, Tweed Shire Council 😑

The key to more affordable housing is boosting supply, and for a generation, we have not built enough homes. That's why the Albanese Labor Government will lead a national effort to speed up housing construction with a targeted investment of $54 million in advanced manufacturing of prefab and modular home construction. We’re backing Aussie manufacturers to build more quality houses, faster with this investment. Making a house in a factory instead of onsite can cut construction times in half. The Albanese Labor Government is tackling Australia’s housing crisis, making it easier to buy, better to rent, and building more homes faster.

@MissRed_Roses @tradwife_ai So glad you said this, that was my first thought: what if the parents live a distance from the hospital and logistically can’t visit all the time? I’d have been devastated if someone made this assumption about me when my baby was in special care

Make sure that's true. When my baby was in the NICU I was in the ICU and physically couldn't visit. We were 2 hours from home so my husband was bouncing between me, the baby, and our 3 older kids. Unfortunately our baby had very little visitors the first week of his life. Still makes me sad to think about it but thankfully his nurses were understanding and amazing. There were other babies whose families were even further away and because of work and other kids their parents struggled to come. That's why they have snuggle volunteers.

@purplepingers My local camping ground (on Crown land) do that, they expect the grounds people to be available 24 hours a day for check-ins - all for a free spot on the grounds worth about $30 a day 🥴

Requiring someone to work 36 hours a week for no pay just to get a roof over their head is beyond exploitation.

Seeing a lot of “well actually, removing negative gearing won’t immediately fix supply issues” and not enough of “we should stop giving $2.7 billion in handouts to people who own multiple houses each year simply because it is deranged fiscal policy”

@charles_haig01 I’m not 100% if they reported it, or if they gave it to a third party who did, but I knew categorically the allegation they were investigating I’d only told one reporter.

So I’m going to post all the funniest parts about getting raided by the NACC but before I do, caveat, they were actually very cool guys and having dealt with the ICAC in the past on equally spurious investigations, the NACC model is definitely the better one.

@DrRLofthouse Northern hemisphere edu-twitter is brutal 😵‍💫 It appears to be a group of mostly men ego-battling about who knows best for young people, while most teachers seem to watch on in amusement knowing from experience that behaviour ideology in practice is rarely an either/or situation

Sarcastic nasty DM from one of the ‘gurus’. I don’t follow him. I’m not going to start. It’s people like him dominating education discourse, practice & profit making who make retiring a whole lot of easier. I’ve had a decade of shit from men who cannot engage like professionals.

@JessHealyWalton Hope journos follow this up, given many other contractors work with kids in the public system but haven’t been identified as being a duty of care risk. Not sure how signing a code of conduct reduces risk beyond what’s already in people’s contracts either 😵‍💫

@JessHealyWalton Did they offer examples of other contexts in which public sector contractors have to sign the VPS code of conduct when they are doing work that is ‘of the system’? E.g do edu consultants to sign it when they are doing work in schools?

@SB_Duggan @AustralianLabor 100%. Doesn’t give us much hope of ineffective gov systems changing themselves either when the ruling party clings onto a hundred year old rule that is out of step with modern expectations. Norms and rules of the party more important than needs and values of the people 🥴

@EmmmKat @AustralianLabor It’s difficult to understate how much they’ve bottled this politically. And I say that without regard to the specifics of the debate. Just such poor politicking
