🚨 CUBA WAS NEVER ABOUT COMMUNISM 🚨 Tarik Cyril Amar argues that Washington’s obsession with Cuba was never truly about communism. The Soviet Union collapsed. Cuba lost its great ideological and military backer. The island became isolated. And yet the United States never ended the punishment because Cuba’s real crime was sovereignty. That is what the Monroe Doctrine really means. For Washington, no country in the Caribbean or Latin America is allowed full sovereignty. They are expected to obey, submit, and accept their place as vessels of American power. Cuba refused. And that refusal — not communism — is the core of the conflict. .@TarikCyrilAmar .@SyrianaAnalysis

The Chinese are getting confident enough to let pro-democracy activists come home. Ironically, says dissident journalist Wang Zhi’an, this could deflate dissidents. “…by letting someone like Yao Cheng come and go freely, the shock it sends through the anti-CCP crowd is massive. Look, you've spent half your life fighting the Communist Party, and the Party couldn't care less about you—you can still come and go as you please. That kind of thing is utterly devastating to someone's lifelong convictions.” I predict that as China gains more confidence, there will naturally be more freedom. And there would be a virtuous cycle as draconian crackdowns become unnecessary.

i just learned that a whole subset of people turn sort of rabid when taiwan comes up. really strange to make contact with the propagandized pro-china crowd. years ago i saw the dalai lama speak, and a bunch of chinese students were protesting. i stopped to talk to them and they were adamant that he was a terrorist who had led mass bombing campaigns. i was like “you have access to the open internet, surely you can see that the chinese government made that up?” and they were like “what makes you think your internet is real? the chinese internet is actually the real one full of true things.”
Romy@Romy_Holland

taiwan is pretty dope. i’m gonna be sad if china takes it. something distinctive would be lost, nothing great would be gained.

My 15 year old came home today and told me one of his teacher called him out as one of only 3 kids who submitted an assignment that was due yesterday. Three. The other 25 didn’t bother submitting. She begged them to submit. Saying that as long as their work isn’t slop, they’ll get a 90. The school system is a mess.

Elon Musk companies destroy capital. He is a TRULY AWFUL business operator. Profits and cash flow are ultimately what matters in determining the value of a business in the real world. Instead Elon Musk produces hopium and lies. For him, the stock price is the product. Fairly tales and narratives can influence the price of a stock in the short run, but in the long run that is no substitute for higher sales and earnings. $TSLA $SPCX

BREAKING: Several sources inside Tehran confirm Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has formally directed that Iran's near-weapons-grade uranium stockpile must not be sent abroad, or given to the US, ending all paths to a nuclear agreement and rejecting the 3-hour-old senior official "denial" of this story. Israeli officials say Trump assured Netanyahu in yesterdays phone call that Iran's uranium would be sent out and that any peace deal must include this clause. With negotiation closed on uranium, Trump‘s only remaining mechanism for removal is a ground operation to physically seize the stockpile.

“You could double the taxes I pay, and it’s not gonna help that teacher in Queens.” This is always the billionaire trick: First, pretend no single tax policy can solve every structural problem in America. Then use that as an excuse to argue against contributing more at all. By that logic, no billionaire should ever fund a rocket company either, because one rocket launch won’t solve humanity. A society where teachers buy classroom supplies out of pocket while individuals accumulate enough wealth to casually purchase newspapers, yachts, and space programs is already screaming that something is fundamentally broken. But somehow the proposed fix is always: “let me keep more.”

ALTERNATIVE VIEW: He’s being dishonest and doesn’t want the public to know how rigged the tax code actually is after decades of wealthy people paying billions of dollars in campaign financing to rig elections and legislation on their behalf. Don’t watch this if you don’t want to find out the truth and get freaked out as a result: youtu.be/mX5U5DNUfBc?si…. Since Citizens United in 2010, federal election spending has totaled well over $100 billion cumulatively across presidential, congressional, party, PAC, Super PAC, and outside-group activity. Do you think some of the smartest people in world history spent well over $100 billion for poops and giggles, OR do you think this was intentional capex designed to capture a high-ROIC opportunity similar to the current spending on AI infrastructure? Wake up. h/t @robtfrank at @CNBC P.S. I’m not anti-billionaire; I may become one someday. I am, however, against people cheating to rig the system disproportionately in their favor at the expense of others. It shouldn’t be this easy to corrupt our democracy, nor should it be this hard for working-class families to get ahead.

The Strait of Hormuz is a wasting asset. It’s too important to the proper functioning of the global economy. Substitutions will be found - have already been found. I posted months ago that Hormuz is not a thing you have to worry about, and this is what I meant. There is much more elasticity in the system than your intuition appreciates - than anyone appreciates. The system is a collective intelligence much greater than anyone’s Hormuz is - or was - a deterrent. Deterrents are effective only if they are not used. If you use them, all leverage is lost. Iran is not an emerging great power. Its ace in the hole has now been used. It does not have another one. It may well reach a deal with the US. But it is much more constrained today than it was a year ago
Ross Douthat@DouthatNYT

It does not make the Trump strategy look any wiser but one of the many problems with "Iran is the new great power" discourse is that control over Hormuz is likely to become a waning asset if the Iranians can't normalize the situation. x.com/JavierBlas/sta…

One time in middle school, we had this substitute teacher that we absolutely ragged on. He was gentle, older, and wore tweed. We thought we were so funny being little jerks to him. 5 years later, I saw him pruning hedges outside a tidy little house near the town landing. My heart sunk, remembering how rotten we were to this elderly gentleman who clearly was just trying to keep busy in his retirement and give back. I'm sure he's dead now, and the hedges are gone. But whenever I drive past that house, I think of him. I'm sorry, sir. May you rest in peace.

Look Garry has suffered from deep LLM-psychosis, but he's right here. The fight against data centers is mostly fear-mongering from foreign disinformation aimed at stunting the American economy. The way to solve this is NOT blocking data centers, it's making sure your local bylaws: * Require specific caps on noise pollution including at set hours * Require their to not be external light pollution * Require an assessment of cooling systems to show the center is using re-circulated/re-claimed water with zero chemical change in output, and 100% of input flows back out. * Require electrical offsets like solar. * Consider requiring that the company has to meet a minimum reinvestment in public goods regionally. 99% of data centers meet this requirements. The 1% that don't should absolutely be axed. The other 99% bring good paying jobs all across America. Mid-western factory towns don't need to build a smog producing factory to have good paying blue collar jobs. 99% of data centers can run quietly, do not waste water, do not need to emit a ton of light, and don't have an impact on local electrical costs. We solve this with responsible policy that keeps us protecting our cities while being innovation forward. Not by going to either extreme.
Garry Tan@garrytan

Sanders and AOC introduced a bill to pause ALL AI data center construction. 300+ local bills filed. Half of planned 2026 data centers facing delays or cancellation. Each one brings billions to local economies. The people who say they want American jobs are trying to block the biggest job creation engine since the interstate highway system.
