As I told @EvanHD, civil servants do not choose that career if they are uncomfortable serving different ministers or governments of different political persuasions. But they do get frustrated when change is happening for change’s sake. This is what gets in the way of good government.

@afneil Not commenting on Reeves's fiscal policy, but it's worth saying that the final fiscal protections of the last government were based on 1. A big planned drop in investment spending and 2. Unspecified current spending allocations that were considered extremely challenging

When Labour came to power July 2024 it inherited a recent OBR forecast of a £77bn deficit for 2025/26. Part of a sensible, steady downward trend in borrowing after the binge borrowing during the pandemic and the energy crisis caused by the Ukraine war. Reeves blew up that downward trend and went on yet another borrowing binge, which is why the deficit ended up £132bn in 25/26, despite a massive increase in taxes. I see no grounds for ‘warm words’ whatsoever. Her reckless fiscal policies are why we have the highest borrowing costs in the G7.

The Rwanda scheme was designed for any or all arrivals, without the UK accepting or considering an asylum application. This European version is for those who have been considered and rejected for asylum, no?

@DavidDavisMP Indeed. Although the EU is already being hypocritical in supporting turn backs to Libya and Tunisia in the Mediterranean but not so to France from the U.K. in the English Channel. We should never have abandoned the Rwanda plan - and now we are paying the price.

Given how hard-line the ECHR was on the UK's Rwanda policy it will be interesting to see how they respond to this new EU policy. Their choice seems to be between allowing it - which would be hypocritical and arguably makes their UK judgement look political - or blocking it, which will be spectacularly controversial and may bring their continued existence into question. thetimes.com/article/00c538…

Never fly @British_Airways! My flight to Madeira was delayed 20hrs due to wind but systems wouldn't let me check in, see my rebooking, or even confirm the flight was operating. There was no assistance offered. I lost my four night holiday. Now two weeks on I am still attempting to get money back. The first response acknowledged the delay — but the refund link didn't work. The second contradicted the first and marked me as a no-show (and claimed the original flight took off). The computer system must not work on their end either. No reply in seven days, including to a follow-up two days ago. @UK_CAA

I think tonight’s was a perfect @BBCPM. Big news well explained, and interesting features wonderfully executed. Well done @EvanHD and team.
