People think of 1066 as the great rupture in British history, but I think its 1688 - that William of Orange is a greater Conqueror than William of Normandy. Over the intervening six centuries we were second rank, feudal, absolutist, basically French. The Dutch came over and taught us about capitalism, debt, the Navy - reconnected us with our Anglo-Saxon roots and catapulted Britain to it's historic role as creator of the modern world.
