St. Petersburg is home to Albert Whitted Airport, the site of the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight back in 1914! Though official construction of the airport began in October 1928, the small airboat that made aviation history years earlier took off from the nearby central yacht basin in St. Petersburg, cementing this location as the birthplace of commercial airline flight. 📸 Albert Whitted Airport, June 1936 @america250fl @MyFDOT_Tampa

This photo shows former Chairman of the State Road Board Henry Phillips and staff posing in front of a State Road Department building circa 1921. Phillips was the agencies’ fourth Chairman to be appointed, which was equivalent of being the Secretary of the Department. This practice lasted until 1969 when the State Road Department became the Florida Department of Transportation. He was also responsible for preparing the legislative bill that officially created the State Road Board! @America250FL

Happy Birthday to the Free State of Florida 🌴🐊 On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state to join the Union. While this momentous point in history marked Florida’s official entry to statehood, our story began long before. As we continue celebrating 250 years of American independence, were proud to recognize the role Florida has played in building our nation through initiatives like the Florida America 250 Road Trip. Visit America250FL.com to plan your trip!

Pictured here: A view of a 1960s density gauge used by FDOT. These devices are designed to make sure soil and aggregate is properly compacted and ready for construction. Florida began using this technology in the 1960s, and while the appearance and design of these devices have evolved, density gauges remain a vital tool used on construction projects. @America250FL

Did you know that FDOT offers a Professional Engineer (P.E.) Training Program? This 4-year program offers a premier instructional opportunity for engineering graduates seeking a career in transportation engineering. Trainees get hands on experience by learning about every aspect of the Department’s operations, preparing them for leadership roles and eventually leading to licensure as a Professional Engineer in Florida. When I became governor seven years ago, I signed an executive order that established an ambitious goal: to make Florida the #1 state for workforce education by 2030. Today, I was proud to announce that we achieved that goal—five years ahead of schedule. Postsecondary enrollment in career and technical education programs has risen 30% during my time as governor, reflecting strong demand and confidence in these pathways. Florida’s apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship system has reached a historic milestone, supporting a record 25,000 active participants statewide. We have also seen a 14% increase in new apprenticeship programs. Thanks to our investments and policies to promote workforce education, Florida has a stronger pool of skilled, job-ready talent than ever before.

It’s Transportation Day at the Florida Capitol, and FDOT is thrilled to be hosting this event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today! Stop by and get an inside look as to how our agency operates and see FDOT’s many different moving parts that come together to keep Florida moving!

Happy Florida Day! Florida may have been the 27th state to join the union in 1845, but we’ve made our mark in the nearly 200 years since! Over the last two centuries, Florida has: • Established a storied past: Florida has the longest continuously occupied settlement in the nation in St. Augustine. • Remains #1 in the present: Our state has the 3 largest cruise posts in the world and 4 large-hub commercial service airports, the only state in the nation with this many. • Fostered future advancements: Florida recently surpassed over 100 space launches in 1 year and is creating the first Advanced Air Mobility Test Bed in the nation. 1845 was a good year, and 2026 is sure to be an even better one!

We are celebrating Florida’s transportation history by highlighting the creation of our very own agency! The State Road Department was formed in 1915 to oversee the maintenance and development of Florida’s early state highway system. Following the construction of our headquarters in the late 1960s, the State Road Department would eventually transform into the Florida Department of Transportation in 1969, adopting many of the practices our agency continues to carry out today. @America250FL

It's hard to believe that since this time last year, Florida has seen snow twice, with last week’s flurries and last year’s historic snowfall that closed major portions of I-10. FDOT’s crews worked tirelessly to lend a hand to our communities in need and last year in just 25 hours, the interstate was reopened after clearing nearly 400 miles of ice and snow! FDOT remains prepared to always answer the call.

2025 saw 109 space launches from Florida, an increase of over 17% from 2024’s record-breaking 93 launches! FDOT is proud to continue supporting Florida’s space industry and do our part to maintain Florida’s competitive edge as the place for space.
