The Tamil Nadu Highways Department is undergoing a major administrative overhaul to accelerate infrastructure projects and eliminate bureaucratic delays. Starting June 15, 2026, the department will merge its four existing functional wings-Construction & Maintenance, NABARD & Rural Roads, Projects, and Chennai City Roads-into four unified Regional Zones: Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, and Combatore. This shift from a "wing-based" to a "zone-based" model empowers Regional Chief Engineers with full authority over all highway activities in their territory, from funding to technical clearance. By cutting down the "Red Tape" and centralizing decision-making, the government aims to ensure that long-pending bypasses and flyover projects are completed fast, providing world-class road infrastructure for the public.
