A lot of anxiety and depression disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Pretending money doesn't affect mental health is a privilege.

On this day 35 years ago, over 1,500 people attended the funeral of an 18-year-old boy from Indiana, United States. His pallbearers included Elton John, one of the most famous musicians in the world, and Michael Jackson. The First Lady sat in the front row. The former president wrote a tribute that ran in the national papers. His name was Ryan White. At 13, he contracted HIV through a blood transfusion to treat his haemophilia, a blood disorder that prevents clotting. Doctors gave him six months. When he tried to go back to school, parents and teachers fought to ban him. Restaurants threw away his dishes. Church members refused to shake his hand. He didn’t fight back. He educated. He went on national television and calmly explained how the virus actually worked. He changed more minds about the disease than any campaign or government programme at the time. He lived five years longer than anyone expected. He passed away one month before his high school graduation. Four months after his funeral, the United States Congress passed the Ryan White CARE Act. It became the largest federally funded programme for people living with HIV in the country’s history, and it still operates today, providing care to over 500,000 people every year.

You will either experience being disabled or die young. Every body is vulnerable. We're not some 'other' group. Disability is part of the human condition. It literally benefits everyone to advocate for disability rights. Everyone is affected by disability.

When I advocate about disability poverty, I'm not trying to diminish other groups experiencing poverty. It is a widespread issue that needs to be addressed across Canada. I advocate more for disability than other issues because I'm disabled and we are constantly ignored.

Disabled people don’t owe you our medical history and diagnosis. You’re not entitled to know “what’s wrong with us” just because our disability is visible. Then if we flip the tables and ask you what your medical history is, you get defensive. It doesn’t feel good, does it?

Perspective: Doug Ford's crimes and costs vs Doubling ODSP. #ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program): 502,112 beneficiaries in 2025 $1,408 maximum allowance = $706,973,696 maximum cost #OW (Ontario Works Unemployment): 483,000 beneficiaries in 2025 $733 maximum allowance = $354,039,000 maximum cost Total Social Assistance Cost in Ontario: $1,061,012,696 or $1 billion dollars a month. That's the same price as the Beer Store contract cancellation ($1.4 b) and the Ontario Place privatization and demolishment ($1.0 b) That's one fifth the price of the WSIB employer payout stolen from injured workers ($5.2 b). That's one sixth the cost of the Ontario Line overrun ($6.2 b) or one whole year's worth of double social assistance for the entire project cost so far ($27 b). Or that's 1/9th of the corporate subsidies that Ontario provides to corporations as this province is now the Corporate Welfare King Poverty Accrues Interest: $33 billion spent on poverty maintenance, poor diets leading to hospitalization, homeless or addicted recipients repeatedly facing trauma, moving costs and community start up. Through preventative care, doubling ODSP and OW and increasing work access/employment training programs we can give people a chance at paying rent, eating right and having access to treatment/work if they want it. Doug Ford has cost us $36 billion dollars so far, doubling ODSP and OW would have cost $12 billion less than that and provided the rental/income safety for people to get employment and leave these programs of their own accord. Less than 1% of ODSP fraud, you need to fight for years while on OW to get access. Giving people the income needed in society today to stabilize and find ways to provide for themselves not only will save money long-term but improve the lives of the most vulnerable in #Ontario. 🇨🇦 ODSP Starvation Program
Since ODSP launched, from day one, it's kept people in deep poverty, never reaching the poverty line—always chalked up to so-called 'fiscal responsibility'.

It's pretty cruel when the government doesn't even give us poverty level supports. Nobody can afford rent. We are literally begging people to help us with food and bills and other basic needs. It's disgusting. If you're disabled and can't work, you get treated like garbage. 🇨🇦

I have been homeless 6 times on #OW and #ODSP, all I could afford in Toronto was slum lord run bug ridden apartments that usually ended with me hospitalized or on the street again. It was a vicious cycle that could easily have been ended instead of building a spa, bulldozing a lake or digging a highway tunnel (all of which we don't need but a solution to homelessness we sure do).
Mitchell Tremblay@ODSPoor

"The number of people on Ontario Works (#OW) and the Ontario Disability Support Program (#ODSP) who are also experiencing homelessness has shot up 72 percent since 2019, according to a new report from human rights organization #Maytree. In its newest policy brief released this week, the organization — which describes itself as “committed to advancing systemic solutions to poverty and strengthening civic communities” — says that more than 30,000 people using these programs don’t have stable housing. Those figures, based on provincial government data obtained through a freedom of information request, measure from July of 2019 to July of 2025." cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

Millennials watched their parents lose everything in 2008. Then got handed $100K in student debt. Then got called entitled for wanting a living wage. Then survived a pandemic in our prime years. Then got priced out of every neighborhood we grew up in. And y’all really wonder why we’re not okay? We’ve been in survival mode for 20 years straight and nobody even noticed.

Giving disabled people the bare minimum is not a flex. You want us to be grateful for the fact that we get disability income (if we get accepted), or that we get accommodations (if they’re given), or even that we’re thought about at all. We deserve more than the bare minimum.
