Mamdani’s blatant disregard for the middle class has put him at odds with black New Yorkers trib.al/Pi63YYV

New York City Council just released a budget proposal. Here's what New Yorkers should know:

Before giving his first ever quarterly crime stats, mayor gives deep condolences to family of baby murdered in Brooklyn yesterday. However, his focus is on “gunfire,” not on the fact that a criminal actually did this.

A 7-month-old baby was shot and killed today in Brooklyn — an unthinkable loss. I’m grateful for the hospital staff who did everything they could and the NYPD for their ongoing work to find those responsible for this heinous murder. We cannot accept this violence as normal. Too many families have suffered this pain.

“She is the first lady of New York City. She has a police detail and a government staff,” said one of the elected officials, who believes Duwaji should explain herself publicly. “She would need to do an interview, better explain herself, and have her do some visits and meetings with key constituencies, like Jewish museums.”

I am relieved that Nerdeen Kiswani is safe after this horrific assassination plot. Political violence has no place in New York or our nation. I thank the @NYPDnews and the @FBI for their swift action, and my thoughts are with Kiswani and her family. nytimes.com/2026/03/27/nyr…

A member of an offshoot of the Jewish Defense League — designated by the FBI as a "known violent extremist organization" — was allegedly building explosive devices to target the home of Nerdeen Kiswani in a chilling act of political violence. The defendant reportedly planned to flee to Israel following the attack. This comes amid an alarming rise in threats and violence across the country targeting Palestinian human rights advocates. I am thankful that the NYPD and FBI thwarted this plot, which could have endangered Nerdeen’s life and those of other New Yorkers. Let me be clear: We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city. No one should face violence for their political beliefs or their advocacy. I am relieved that Nerdeen is safe. Our city must meet hate with solidarity, and meet fear with an unshakable commitment to justice and to one another.

I am deeply troubled to learn that a person in custody died on Rikers Island this morning. My thoughts are with their loved ones, who are now facing an unimaginable loss. Transparency and accountability are essential, and the Department of Correction is conducting an investigation. While we do not yet know the cause of death, too many have died on Rikers Island for far too long. Rikers must close, and we will pursue every avenue to do so as quickly as possible.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently got the political equivalent of what baseball players call a brushback pitch — a fastball deliberately thrown dangerously close to a batter’s head in order to intimidate the player, who must flinch or duck to avoid a devastating injury. The mayor is getting municipal chin music from the major bond-rating agencies: Moody’s formally changed its outlook on the city’s finances from “stable” to “negative,” and S&P Global Ratings opined that Mamdani’s budget plan will “make it difficult to sustain budgetary balance beyond fiscal years 2026 and 2027.” The negative outlook from the agencies is a warning, writes columnist Errol Louis. The next step could be a downgrade of the city’s bond rating, which would raise the cost of borrowing money for routine city operations. Mamdani maintains that the decision to revise the outlook is premature, pointing out that the city’s overall credit rating remains strong and has not been downgraded. But the message from Wall Street seemed crystal clear: Unless Mamdani adopts a more fiscally conservative approach, we will punish City Hall in the markets.
