Japanese copyright views confuse me cause on one hand, they have a thriving and extremely popular doujinshi culture which openly violates copyright in the same way all fanart does and this is seen as acceptable simply because the companies don't pursue them.
But ensuring a game they payed for can still be played after EOS is seen as some extreme flagrant disregard for copyright law even though by japanese law, it's still likely completely legal in most cases to do it.
Japan's stricter view of copyright seems to stop completely with specifically playing games and watching anime, nothing else.

Commiefornia of all places proposes a bill, AB 1921, for a provision to allow gamers to be able to keep playing the games they paid for.
Publishers will not be allowed to sell the games within 2 months of the end of support, and gamers will have to be notified at least 60 days in advance before the servers go offline.
Then the companies will have to provide a plan for maintaining access to the game with offline play or allow the customers to run their own private server.
One thing that I would disagree with is the provision for a "full refund" of the game if the company can't provide alternative means of playing the game. That is absurd, as the gamers were able to play the game and enjoy it. At best, it should be a partial refund etc, as money was exchanged for some enjoyment of the entertainment media.
But another key provision that weakens it is that free-to-play and subscription-based games are "exempt" despite those games having robust MTX mechanisms to monetize their games.
Either way... I can already hear PirateSoftware crying about how hard it will be on developers to accommodate these provisions.😂
