Hint: That person is you, claiming identical processes are followed. Police, CPS, judge, (jury) - all subjective.

Appeals exist for a reason, again see the examples I’ve shared of wrongly carried out cases which you have yet to speak to.

Discretionary charging is a thing for certain offences (subjective from the police officer), CPS can subjectively drop prosecution, etc.

@sctb9991 @RupertLowe10 Appeals exist where reasonable doubt is a thing. This crime has zero doubt. If someone murders in broad daylight, in front of 1 million witnesses, 200 cameras, you don't need 30 appeals and retrials - and anyone who argues a good system allows that is insane.

Just because the US allows it, it does not mean it is mandatory. Historically he would have been hanged 5 minutes after the trial concluded with his overwhelming guilt. Cheap.

For people whom it would make a huge difference, a guarantee is better for most. In my revised example, the extra millions don't offer too much.

Lots of weird reactions to this. “This is why Britain’s poor” etc. These are pretty standard results from prospect theory (the certainty effect). People overweight guaranteed outcomes relative to probable ones. There’s no unique psychological insight into the British mind here.

@SophyRidgeSky I don’t mean to sound ungrateful as i’d take it but honestly £50k is not ‘life changing’ anymore. A few debts, a holiday, maybe a new car or old one fixed up. It’s not getting you a house deposit nor drastically improving your kids lives in the long term…£150k-200k is arguable.

I think a lot of the commentary on this is missing the fact that £50,000 *would* be life changing for an awful lot of people

That’s false. On average, UK rent is cheaper than mortgage: rightmove.co.uk/news/articles/… And if your goal is saving for a house, you can rent a smaller home. You’re pretending to be describing the general population, but as I said from the beginning, it is only in very specific circumstances where even entertaining the £50k is reasonable.

So yes, that deposit is literally life-changing, but please go and lecture the world on stuff you have little knowledge of.

In order to own a house, you need more than a down payment. You need enough of a steady stream of income to afford to pay off the mortgage. If you have that, you are in position to save up for a slightly cheaper house anyway. £1 million would be enough to pay off the entire home and still have money leftover, even if you had no chance of every affording a home before. The question is not £50k or 100% nothing. It’s 50% nothing or 50% £1 million. If you choose to ignore the second half of that formula in the name of hyper-conservatism, you are not making a financially prudent decision.
