Shia Islam is real weird. It expects persecution. And it valorizes suffering and resistance. But not even necessarily victory. Husayn their key figure, basically just died at Karbala. And it wasn’t like « And then he was avenged! » or anything. It’s like…he rode into battle against overwhelming odds, got killed, then his followers were killed or enslaved. But what he is remembered for is resistance against injustice without victory. At least…not of the earthly variety. He’s often depicted riding into the last battle where he loses his life…turning into a beam of light. It’s difficult not to think of Husayn when one Iranian leader after another refuse to take the most basic safety precautions.

Tulsi Gabbard admits under oath that the killing of the Ayatollah in Iran could now create major blowback for the United States. She says his death is motivating Iranians to fight back even harder, and the consequences are still unknown. “The Iranians are certainly using that as a call to action.” “We might have played into their cultural biases erroneously.”

How did people even learn to code when there was no docs, no YouTube, nothing? Genuinely curious!

> Be like @amasad. > Builds software at 12 yrs old in Visual Basic and sells it to LAN gaming cafes to automate admin work > Makes enough money from it by 14 and takes his school friends out to McDonald's in Jordan (which was really expensive), instantly becoming the cool kid > Goes to university and skips all the classes so he can code > Fails university classes multiple times because of attendance > Hacks the university's database and changes his grades > University finds a system error that originated from Amjad's home, so they call him, and he teaches the Deans and Professors how to fix it > Then becomes the first person in the world to compile Python to run in the browser > Open-sources all of it on GitHub > Code Academy builds their platform using Amjad's open-sourced code > They reach out and ask if they can hire him. He refuses, so they fly to Jordan to convince him. He agrees to $12/hr, remote > Then they give him an O-1 visa and Amjad moves to NY to work at Code Academy > Leaves after a while, moves to California, and joins Facebook > Quits to build Replit with his wife. > Rejected by YC 4x > Amjad writes about product updates on Hacker News > Raises $500K at $6M from Bloomberg > PG emails Sam Altman a link to Amjad's Hacker News article. > Sam DMs Amjad and Replit gets into YC. > Raises $400M at $9B valuation. I wrote a mini-biography on Amjad's childhood, founding journey, and philosophies on AI. Check link in comments.
Amjad Masad@amasad

We’ve raised $400M at a $9B valuation. Investors include Georgian, G Squared, Prysm, 1789, YC, Coatue, a16z, Craft, and QIA, with strategic investments from Accenture, Databricks, Okta, and Tether. We’re also lucky to have incredible individuals backing us, including Shaq and Jared Leto. This funding will help us scale our ambition and expand beyond coding into AI systems that center human creativity. Replit is now used at 85% of the Fortune 500. We have an opportunity to help shape the future of work. One where AI abstracts away the boring parts and humans shine as creative directors. We’re also investing more globally, particularly in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Innovation can come from anywhere in the world, and we want to help unlock it.

No shame on Replit, built a bigger business than I've ever built. But at the rate Claude Code /Cowork is moving, why does Replit needs to exist? What's the bull case for the future of Replit and similar tools if all the model companies are on the same path.

I really miss traditional coding days. Going through documentation line by line. Digging into Stack Overflow threads from 2013. Reading random dev blogs at 2am. Watching 40-minute YouTube tutorials just to fix one bug. It felt… real.

What? Haha, no. I have plenty of money still. But it would be nice to keep being able to keep making games and hire artists to make the games feel like works of love without feeling like it's a financial burden. But as I said, I'd probably still do it even if the game somehow didn't sell well. I'm in it for the love of the game. Pardon the pun.
