@doyle0213 Shocking that there’s a chance that a Fire Battalion Chief was unwilling to listen, what are the odds?!?

A lawsuit claims firefighting tactics may have contributed to the loss of the Kodiak Enterprise. It also underscores the need for proper training for land based firefighters responding to ship fires. Marine firefighting is different and this will spark important conversations.

@mateosfo Civil engineer here. And retired firefighter. Engineers design roads with fire trucks in mind in the vast majority of America, you’re crazy. And FD’s filling a role no one else would do (funeral homes OG) doesn’t mean the mission changes. GE don’t make generals or electricity

@LinkofSunshine @TRICROTIC12 Always nice to choose a complete outlier as the baseline for a false statistic. There are plenty of fires still in the US, where you probably aren’t. And 3000+ people who die from them. Silly.

@jasonc_nc @theUofAustin I hesitate to engage in this given the limited lens you view the issue but urban settings in the US have far better survival metrics than rural/suburban areas based on FD response. Other factors are unrelated to the FD response. Which I’m sure you know but don’t fit your agenda.

Jason,

We agree on some points then. There is a need for FDs to begin considering factors beyond their own preferences and habits. The demands today are not what they were, and refusing to adapt is actually hurting life safety in urban settings, not improving it. Heck, EU trucks even have better safety features for firefighters themselves. We’re stuck in the 90s with our equipment.
Jason,@jasonc_nc

This story is indeed appalling. Partially missing is how the culture of fire departments has exacerbated this problem and led to safety issues that cause far more injuries and deaths than fires.

@JuanJuick @eugyppius1 So who was it that advocated so successfully for those ‘engineered’ solutions?!? It wasn’t the building industry or the politicians. It was fire departments. A government agency actually trying to solve the problem. You’re welcome. #dumb

@eugyppius1 So how does FD support its continued existence at current, and always asking for more, funding? Role on every medical call. Obstruct EMS access by parking immediately in front of the residence and make me park down the block. Give everyone Narcan, you never know!

one peculiarity about America, is that when you call for emergency medical services there, the fire department shows up in huge fire-fighting truck. sooner or later the ambulance also comes.

@magnepug @eugyppius1 Or it may be that your limited definition of what a ‘Fire Department’ is hasn’t kept up with the expectations placed on a service that is in the community, cam respond within seconds and make a huge life saving difference in their community. #dumb

@eugyppius1 It’s because the fire departments are trying to justify their massive budgets by attending to situations beyond their abilities. There are very few fires today. Cities would be better off reducing/combining firehalls and increasing ambulances but fire dept screams.

@ReformedArgghh @eugyppius1 Yeah, the unions are always looking for ways to increase the workload in their members. Or maybe they get there fast and are capable of saving their life?!? #dumb

@eugyppius1 Lot of weird grift in the firefighting departments because they're sacred cows Almost certainly get paid some overtime or other bonus for rolling out like that

@eugyppius1 If it were not for their EMS duties, most fire departments would not be able to justify their existence

@eugyppius1 So amusing that the ones who are adamant that it’s ’union rules’ or a scam, are males quite capable of joining the fire department and getting in on the ‘scam.’ Like most SM, people have no idea why things happen and don’t bother asking why from those who do #cowards #ignorant

@varunb777 @MCCCANM There was a foaming operation under way, that’s way more complicated than a clear runway. Apples and oranges here.

@MCCCANM I remember very well how in the Asiana crash the fire trucks accidentally ran over one of the passengers and killed them.

Tough call to blow the slides. Can’t really criticize anyone for doing so. We brief what we’ll do in an evacuation on every flight. Here is my Captain’s brief: “I’ll go to the back of the jet, then sweep forward to make sure nobody is left behind. When I get there, we go down the slides & start counting heads, herding the cats & watching for fire trucks.” “Counting heads” means I want to verify all passengers & crew have made it off the jet. “Herding cats” means passengers will be scared & scattered, doing random things, and we need them to stay together. “Watching for fire trucks” refers to the unfortunate possibility that passengers will be hit & killed by responding fire vehicles…as has happened in multiple instances. Especially if they’ve wandered off & are doing the “herding cats” thing. Anyway, glad this all worked out safely!
