@CorfmanTim @jennfrey The product that’s in high demand is the whole youth sports package. Club/travel ball, leagues, tournaments, and of course the gear (anything our culture and these mega corporations can deem necessary for our kids to compete at a high level).

@BrandonTierney The vocal minority on this subject are complaining saying that youth sports shouldn’t be expensive like everything else. My take is exactly like yours, it’s not, unless you want it to be.

Massive cost difference between local travel and club ball/national events. Start there. There are absolutely solid, cheaper options. No one is forcing kids to play club. That’s where many of the elite players ultimately belong — and yes, that world gets expensive. But competitive local travel ball? In many cases, incredibly affordable compared to what people make it out to be. There ARE options. Same with lessons. Helpful? Sure. Mandatory? No. Also… how much is the newest iPhone in 2026? Jordan sneakers? Gaming systems? Concert tickets? EVERYTHING is expensive now — not just baseball and youth sports. The issue isn’t simply cost. The issue is priorities, expectations, and understanding what level actually fits your kid. I'm in the middle of it--hope this helps.

@lexetscientia @coachvint You can find numbers like $1,200-$2,000 annually with a quick Google search. The crazy thing is that it’s actually more like $3-$4k a year if you expand the definition to include convenience store purchases.

I talked a dad who told me he spent $10k a year on travel baseball between tourneys, travel, and gear for his son. He got a partial scholarship to D-2 school. If he had put the $10k in a mutual fund each year, he would have had about $190,000. The scholarship was $5k a year.

@AlPawlowski Kids have so many more opportunities these days than that last generation. But isn’t that what we strive for?

Travel ball seems to be getting a bad rap recently. I get it, it’s expensive, and what the tournaments charge you just to watch your kid play is criminal. That being said, I’m envious of these kids that get to play travel ball today. When I was their age, I loved to …

@jimshapiro It’s a fair point (especially at $10k a year for 10 years!) but I don’t think it considers the whole picture. If you are “investing” money into your child’s sports I think you’re looking at it incorrectly. The return you get isn’t monetary…or at least it shouldn’t be.

@bsmolka I know this probably happens but it’s the exception and not the norm. Most people are smart enough to know that idea is ridiculous.

And the intense pressure from coaches to make the players become single-sport athletes at age 10 is horrendous. “Play year round for us or you lose your spot” absolutely is a thing

@KenSpang Instead of bringing back the days of the sandlot (my personal wish), the solution is something different. I’m working on something locally. 🤞

10 year olds have 2 bats, oven mitts, space goggle sunglasses, etc. Funny thing is, we did just fine with foam trucker hats, shared helmets, and screen printed jerseys sponsored by the local insurance man.

@CoachMB49 Both systems are fantastic in their own way and you’d think people could see that. We are just too programmed to say one thing is wrong because we believe another is right. Our athletes get the best memories from both and they absolutely learn great life lessons from both.

Too much organization and structure, imo. When we were kids there was an empty field near our neighborhood. We played football, baseball there. Someone had a bat, someone had a ball, if we hit one in the gutter, well, we went and got it. No coaches, no parents, just us kids having fun and making it up as we went along.
