@ChristandGuitar Having practiced veneration of saints for over half a decade now, it really isn't hard to keep a clear distinction. What's owed to God and what's given to the saints isn't remotely in the same ballpark. I can understand the concern from an outside perspective but it's not hard.

In the midst of this sudden influx of Eastern Orthodox awareness, this fantastic video by Gavin Ortlund is extremely relevant. While we, on paper, can distinguish between "worship" and "veneration," in practice, the human heart has a hard time. If someone is bowing down to or kissing icons, what is the actual human position that prevents us from slipping into idolatry? We would be better off keeping ourselves from idols (1 John 5:21) rather than play with fire. Worship God alone (Luke 4:8). The orthodox church is not a lot different than the roman church in this regard - they both claim to be the "one true church" by which all salvation comes through. But they can't even get this simple doctrine right, historically or theologically.

@OVTweetmarck I took myself off the donor list a couple years ago because of this. I didn't want to but unfortunately we don't live in a sane world.

Kars4Kids has been banned from advertising in California as it has been deemed deceptive by a judge for helping exclusively Orthodox Jewish kids in the New York and New Jersey areas despite having eight year old actors of all races singing their jingle. static1.squarespace.com/static/6330d82…

@mc1645 @shagbark_hick Episcopalian technically exists here but they're pretty much non-existent. It seems that the old upper class didn't become pioneers to early Florida. All the old settlers were Presbyterian and Baptist.

@mc1645 @shagbark_hick It's interesting to see how the dynamic changes in which part you're at. The upper class in rural central Florida has been Presbyterian. Every orange grove biz manager I've known other than my dad (now Catholic) and another maverick is one. Baptist remains working class here.

Years ago I had a friend from Mississippi who was a black Catholic. Nice kid, always wore suit jackets, was a law student. At coffee hour after Mass, someone once asked him if in his life he's been hassled more for being black or for being Catholic. "I've been hassled WAY more for being Catholic," he told us. "By far." I believed him when he said it, but I was thinking about him these past few days when I found myself deep within a stronghold of some very, very hardcore Baptist "home church" types in the South. Even when I was living homeless, I cannot recall being treated quite so low as I was treated there. I believe an old mutt would've been greeted more kindly than I was, though I was on my best behavior and made no provocations of any kind, nor did I evangelize a whit. Nonetheless, word had traveled that I am a Catholic, and I was looked upon as though I'd been infected with a communicable disease straight from the devil himself. Quite a few there -- perhaps a majority -- would not so much as make eye contact with me, though they certainly did not know me from Adam. I find this sort of thing funny, frankly. Treat a Catholic as if he's a leper and he rejoices, or he ought to, and that's what I did. Another chance for penance; another reminder of what low treatment a sinner like me really does deserve. So I left feeling thankful in some sense. I guess when you subscribe to a cult of such recent invention as theirs is, the only tactics you've really got against adherents to the 2,000-year-old Church are things like shunning, silence, and plain old meanness. Would've been interesting if they'd have tried to get me saved in the way they believe is necessary. Lord knows if I had no religion they'd have tried with great enthusiasm. But they did appear to think that a Catholic is so low and lost that he is not worth trying to save. Quite a strange Gospel they seem to be preaching there, I would've enjoyed a respectful conversation but none came.

@Kurt_Steiner It always frustrated me to see this move away from theological naming. Now you see something called "Living Water" and you have to dig 4 pages deep on their site to discover that they're Dutch Reformed. I think my old hometown Baptist church is still named the old way.

Problem I enjoy having: scrambling to bring the family to Mass 15 minutes early because it will be standing room only if I don't.

@Tawadros15 There were two Mormon missionary girls who would frequent my college apartment complex. My roommate thought one of them was cute so he kept inviting them over. I had to sit him down and convince him she would only date him if he became Mormon. Took a few tries honestly.

Mormon girl missionaries showed up to my front door the other day. They could not have been more than 19 or 20. I politely declined to take a copy of the Book of Mormon and told them I was Catholic and not interested. It seems so dangerous to let young ladies walk door to door.

If you are an Englishman, inside you there are two competing archetypes. The Puritan and the Cavalier. The Puritan: morally upright, stiff upper lip, valuing righteousness and factual correctness above all else. Stern but loving. Bookish. Ascetic, Spartan even. Impeccable manners. Well groomed and not ostentatious. The Cavalier: love of hierarchy and tradition, boisterous, patriotic. Beer and wine swilling, partying. Fondness for gun and blade. Love military history and flashy uniforms. Quick witted. Fun. A dandy - even a cad. Both of these are beautiful in their own way.
