The New York Times is reporting that the Catholic Church is experiencing a significant surge in converts.

Speaking to the Jewish community in Rome, Pope John Paul II made crystal clear the teaching of the Catholic Church on 1) the brotherhood of Jews and Christians; 2) the sinfulness of anti-Jewish hatred and prejudice; and 3) the irrevocability of God's covenant with the Jewish people: "The Jewish religion is not 'extrinsic' to us, but in a certain way is 'intrinsic' to our own religion. With Judaism therefore we have a relationship which we do not have with any other religion. You are our dearly beloved brothers and, in a certain way, you are our elder brothers. On the basis of this brotherhood renewed by Christ, the Church rejects every form of discrimination and anti-Semitism. She condemns them as contrary to the very spirit of Christianity. She deplores all hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism directed against the Jews at any time and by anyone.... The covenant between God and the Jewish people has never been revoked. 'The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable' (Rom 11:29).

ANNOUNCEMENT 🎉Dominican House of Studies and the Thomistic Institute have appointed me the McDonald Agape visiting scholar. I can’t begin to express why this is such an honor, especially during the new presidency of Dominican Legge. open.substack.com/pub/matthewbar… This temporary appointment, which is reserved for a Protestant, involves lecturing to the brothers and students (I am lecturing on Aquinas, Calvin, Protestant Scholastics, and Barth), leading soirées with guest scholars and the Dominicans, participating in Thomistic Institute conferences, writing my own projects on Aquinas, etc. On this side of modernism, conservative Catholics and Protestants must come together around Aquinas. But rather than stare at each other and the impasse over our differences, we must stand side by side with Aquinas as we face outward, together giving an answer to the metaphysical challenges of our secular age. Few are so equipped for this task as the Dominican Order, in large part due to their nearly millennia old ability to rest confidently in the First Principles of Thomism, a confidence that then galvanizes them to engage a secular culture. We have much to learn from them, and we will be much stronger to stand with them on these First Truths as the culture becomes more secular still.
