Spoke to Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung as they traveled home to the United States just in time for Thanksgiving. I told them how glad I was that they were in good health and that they’ll soon be reunited with their loved ones.

For the families of those Americans newly freed by the Chinese government, this Thanksgiving there is so much to be thankful for.  After nearly a decade of imprisonment by the Chinese government, Kai Li is finally on his way back to American soil and to freedom. Over the years, I have worked closely with Mr. Li’s son, Harrison, to speak directly to the highest levels of the Chinese and U.S. governments to advocate for Mr. Li’s release and safe return to his family in Huntington, New York. Even when it felt like there was no hope, we never stopped believing that one day Mr. Li would return home.  Soon, Kai Li will finally be reunited with his family because President Biden and his Administration also kept the faith and never stopped working to secure Mr. Li’s release and the release of other Americans wrongfully detained by the Chinese government. President Biden’s personal engagement with President Xi made this joyous day possible. Thanks to President Biden, all wrongfully detained Americans held in the People's Republic of China will soon be home. I look forward to welcoming Mr. Li back home to New York very soon.

After years of working with family, the administration, and human rights advocates, we got the incredible news this morning that my constituient Kai Li is returning home from wrongful imprisonment in China. Kai was taken into custody during a 2016 visit to China to commemorate the one-year anniversary of his mother’s death. He was arrested, sentenced during a one-hour secret trial on sham “espionage” charges, and had been subject to painful conditions and deteriorating health since. At long last, he is returning home to his family.   I have been inspired by the courageous work of Kai’s son, Harrison, who has been a tireless advocate for his father in unimaginably difficult circumstances. The Li family will finally be whole for Thanksgiving.   Thank you to @POTUS and all involved in this effort. I look forward to personally welcoming Kai home in the coming weeks.
