Joining me at this year’s State of the Union is Texas native Mark Swidan. Mark was wrongfully detained by the Chinese government for 12 years and even sentenced to death. Thanks to his mother Katherine’s relentless advocacy and Congress passing H. Res. 90, which Senator Cruz and I introduced, Mark is finally home. His courage reminds us never to take our liberty for granted.

13 years ago today, on Nov. 13, 2012, 🇺🇸 Mark Swidan was wrongfully arrested in China. After enduring unimaginable conditions & more than a decade of injustice, he was finally released on Nov. 27, 2024. What Mark suffered during those years was horrific. But today, we are grateful that we do not mark another year of his imprisonment, nor another day under a death sentence in a Chinese prison.
