I know a lot of people are excited about the possibility of S40 being recovered but it's worth mentioning that the logistics and timing might make it unlikely to be transported back to the US. If S40 isn't removed from the Indian Ocean it will drift to who knows where and end up on a beach and that poses a number of legal concerns. I also think there are a number of challenges associated with trying to scuttle it in its current configuration so recovery allows the hardware to be in controlled hands. I'm currently assuming this means S40 will be towed to Australia and delt with in a port where it can be removed from the water. I have to assume there is some level of data collection that SpaceX would like to do once S40 makes it to Australia since it may help inform design changes for the next flight and possibly help green light a catch attempt. However, I have a feeling once analysis is complete it will be the end of the road for S40. If SpaceX is planning to catch S41 at Starbase in a number of weeks, does it make sense to boat S40 halfway around the world to Starbase? It would be very expensive and likely take weeks or months for it to get to Starbase and by that time S41 could have been caught and the engineers would have nearly identical data on site and easily accessible. In addition, if any ship is destined for the display garden, I imagine it would likely be the first caught ship so it can be next to the first caught booster. It certainly would be cool if S40 could make it back to Starbase and be put on display but I'm just doubtful that is the plan when considering all the logistics.
