The Karmelo Anthony verdict shows that the justice system has reverted back to the Jim Crow South era. It is no longer about evidence. It is no longer about right or wrong. It is about keeping racial score through the prosecution and imprisonment of Black people. It was no surprise that an all white jury would find a 19 year old kid, who was bullied and harassed by two 6’1” bullies, guilty of murder while he was minding his business. We have seen this story before. A young Black man is put on trial, and somehow the burden shifts from what happened to him, to why he should not have defended himself. The facts become secondary. The optics become everything. The outcome feels predetermined long before the verdict is read. People will tell you not to make it about race. But race has always been part of the story in America. The hard truth is that many Black people no longer believe they will receive the benefit of the doubt when their freedom is on the line. And verdicts like this are exactly why. At some point, we have to stop pretending that everyone is playing by the same set of rules. Because the people watching this case saw something very different than what that jury claimed to see.

Thanks for proving it was not self-defense. Under Texas Penal Code § 9.32, deadly force requires a reasonable belief that it was immediately necessary to stop unlawful deadly force. No reasonable person could believe Austin was about to kill Melo or use deadly force. Texas also limits self-defense when the person claiming it provoked the confrontation, consented to the fight, or responded to words alone. Melo escalated with “come move me,” “pussies,” and “touch me and see what happens.” If he truly feared for his life, he would not have kept the knife hidden while provoking a reaction. He would have shown it, warned everyone back, and used deadly force only as a last resort. Immediate danger means a gun, weapon attack, choking, robbery, or a real threat of death or SERIOUS bodily injury. A shoulder push is not enough. A punch was not even thrown, and even a punch would not justify stabbing. Texas has no duty to retreat, but only if the person was not engaged in criminal activity. Melo carried a prohibited weapon on school grounds. That's engaging in criminal activity. Meaning, he now has a level of responsibility to retreat. He was asked 5-15 times to leave and refused. Witnesses said Austin stated, “I am not going to fight you at a school track meet.” That destroys intent and shows he was responding to the idea of fighting, not initiating it. I.E. "somebody" brought up the idea of fighting and Austins response was to decline. That certainly hurts the "life in danger claim". Size only matters if it coincides with a reasonable fear of death or SERIOUS bodily injury. There is ZERO evidence Melo’s life was in danger. A shoulder push doesn't add the element of size. Sorry. Was deadly force proportional? Was it immediately necessary? NO and NO. It is not even close. Final point: This is a tragedy for both families. Both families are going to be without a son. I understand that Melo’s supporters may not want to hear that, but the reality is that Melo is going to spend a very long time or even life in prison. That is just the legal reality of the situation. Trying to turn this into a race-based fight between teenagers is just as absurd as calling it self-defense. The racial insults, the “Cracka” comments, the “YT”, “FAFO” talk, and the attempts to frame this as some broader racial war do not help anyone. Most certainly, not you. They only inflame the situation, solidify stereotypes, and unfairly drag an entire community into a bubble with the few loud, worthless, and reckless cretins. It is especially unfair to the productive, responsible, respectful, good-intentioned black people who contribute to society every day and want nothing to do with that kind of embarrassing and degenerate behavior.
