@mikesamonek That's not what this means, at all. This is allowing you to find a server that specifically calls out links to illegal content in their moderation policy. Nobody on the Mastodon team is endorsing anything, nor could they disallow anything if they wanted to.

@robtreat2 I get that point of view but the reality is this stack starts off with pretty terrible performance and it’s easily visible even on small mastodon servers let alone the large ones people are flocking to. There’s already ppl struggling to host it with this stack.

So the new Mastodon stack is closer to the same stack Twitter fail whale era ditched in the Big Rewrite. Nobody’s worried about this?

@kellabyte No, it doesn't matter. It's fast enough. The main issue is the biggest servers don't turn off registration fast enough when a new wave arrives. The network scales like smtp, not twitter, and it is more than Mastodon; Mastodon could vanish entirely and the network would be fine.

@JaredWalczak Truth Social never even tried to network with any other server. Same with Counter Social.

Most other Mastodon servers evidently block people on Gab from interacting with their users, though I'm not sure how it works with Truth Social, and whether people who send messages on Trump's platform can interact with the people now leaving Twitter for other Mastodon instances.

I just learned that both the alt-right Gab and the Trump-affiliated Truth Social are Mastodon servers and this is extremely funny to me.

For those holding Mastodon to a standard that comes w corporate backing: mastodon is completely open source and free. People who run the servers? Pay for them out of their own pocket. In exchange, our data isn’t farmed. Have patience; remember the fail whale?

@fak3r @oom_rl I'm not an expert on mastodon (I don't run it) but it's probably a cleanup task that not all admins bother setting up a cron job to run. The ghosts probably don't hurt anything, other than some minor confusion for new users. Which happens to be the theme of the week...

Update: so far things not going well on Mastodon. After the initial post, nothing I try to post is showing up. And despite setting it *not* to send an email every time someone follows me, it's sending them. I hope these are just teething problems.

If nothing else Mastodon is introducing people into the whole Open Source tradition of trying to be enthusiastic about something really bad that doesn't work at all because you don't want to be rude to the maintainers and the thing you really want to use doesn't work anymore.

@waipeng @RobbieCargill90 @solarise_webdev @Therezin @RealSexyCyborg If you want to redirect, yeah, you need a host to do the redirecting. But you can duplicate the site, set it back up on the old host, then delete the accounts one-by-one to announce to other instances the ghost accounts are gone.

@emetz16 @billplein @dbo23021828 @paulkrugman A lot of fediverse hosts are not fond of the big cloud providers and use smaller hosts or VPSes or even basement computers. The node in question, though, is one of the biggest, a bit of a scaling canary for the latest Mastodon version. But the network itself scales just fine.
