@Benthamsbulldog away from immediate human impact e.g. shrimp welfare and x-risk. I think if there was a causal estimate then the argument for EA could be the shortest blog post ever written: X lives were saved. On other hand, without a causal estimate it seems a bit un-EA-like to claim that ...

@alexbronzini I mean, he mocked the guy killed at the Trump assassination attempt and also mocked Charlie Kirk's death. I think when you cross the line into celebrating death, you become too toxic to touch.

@sermonfanclub How do you not see nonvegans as animal abusers? Even when I wasn't vegan i saw myself as an animal abuser

Why should we be the only ones to talk about… *checks notes* animal abuse? So nobody else can talk about that? What is this random dig you’re trying to take at other vegans while slyly covering it with a faux pro-indigenous sentiment? for brownie points?? Girl

@KelseyTuoc I took algebra in 4th, but it was not an offering but rather something fought for by my parents

In fact, I took algebra in 6th grade! Good middle schools offer algebra in 6th grade! The difference looks minor only because 8th/9th is a really important difference for college preparedness and worth fighting for, not because 8th/9th are the range of reasonable views here.

This is an incredibly unstrategic fight to pick but every time I wade into a battle over whether to allow eighth graders to take algebra I just want to say "actually, a good school offers algebra in sixth grade and a great school offers it in third."

@tofuafficionado PETA has probably done the most good out of any active organization. It's had some major policy wins

PETA has some legit criticisms 100%, but please remember that there are VERY powerful industries at hand that have vested interests in maintaining the status quo. There is every reason for them to influence public opinion on animal rights discourse. Be critical of EVERYTHING.

@Seraphaestus @mags_mclaugh In most cases, an individual purchase won't have an impact, but in the rare case it does, it has a large impact - say a shipment, so it averages out to 1 animal killed per animal bought. In practice, due to imperfect elasticity, closer to 0.75, but you didn't break math, sorry

@mags_mclaugh Sadly life isn't a trolley problem; an individual will have no impact on the supply/demand of the meat industry. They'll slaughter the same no. of animals to put on shelves & thrown away if not eaten The only real impact you can make is change minds or organize collective action

Most of life is just trying to do marginally better and not beating yourself up too much for not being perfect. I don't cook meat in the home anymore really. On occasion will have meat at a restaurant. It's pretty easy

The thing is... that's right, I unironically can't model that. Because if I thought someone was proudly advocating for 1 million literal murders of literal babies every year, I would spend exactly 0 minutes per day crying about how that person doesn't want to be my friend.

@Wizardking42 @__Siffa @discordspies @overeasysteezy @brianonhere The tech industry is thriving and only getting bigger! I'm not even sure how you can try to make your argument. Do you expect AI to create a long, complicated computer program which cures cancer? The effect can only be measured in aggregate, and every measure says tech is huge

@Mike_from_PA But there are a lot of people who genuinely have good takes on politics (on SM) but they don't run for office. They are like Platner, average people with normal lives & they should run. That's how we get our society back.

@vivian39_ Read All Animals Are Equal. The original book's first chapter was close to that essay, but the revised version cut out most of it. It really makes a very compelling case for the concept of speciesism and I don't think he should have cut it from the book.

about half through “animal liberation now.” i don’t find“speciesism” to be very compelling. It’s too woke, not in the good way. BUT - you really do not have to value animals very much (I don’t!) to realize that what we are doing to them is not worth it!
