@catalinmpit I’m 61 and stopped coding at 40. Never stopped keeping up with new technologies and trends. Never stopped coding for myself. By 55 returned to coding but from a different perspective: prototyping decades of ideas and leading devs with up to date skills and speed. Still live it.

Software engineering is fulfilling for me. But at the same time, it’s very mentally taxing. I don’t know if I’ll do it past my 40s professionally. Although I’ll aways code as a hobby. After “retiring”, I’d like to own a small coffee shop. That’s one of my dreams as a coffee lover.

@ylecun In the Netherlands, where there is a lot of opportunity for children to drown in canals, rivers etc, we teach them to swim by the time they are 6. No amount of guard rails could save them. We already know how to use Google and now we need to learn how to use LLMs.

Let's see, Typing "how to synthesize codeine?" on Google gives you links to articles with detailed answers. Nobody has ever worried about that. But somehow, people are now demanding safety guardrails to stop LLMs from answering such questions. What? Why?

Very interesting paper by a group of CMU chemists testing a GPT4 based agent to do chemistry research and experimentation. Includes this interesting warning, among others. There sure seems to be some kind of writing on some kind of wall... arxiv.org/abs/2304.05332

I don't mean to make a bad taste joke, but pronouncing GPT-4 in quasi-French ("gé pé té for") sounds *very* awkward.

I'm unbelievably proud and happy with our commitment to 100% eBL by 2030! 🙌 Together with @DCSA_org and the other carrier members, we have committed to transition to 100% eBL by 2030, with a first step of 50% by 2027. 1/3

@FryRsquared My daughter was in a group of maths losers. The teacher was a genius. He said that he didn’t worry whether the kids understood maths but want to ensure that it didn’t scare them. It worked. It’s all about confidence, I agree.

A little piece I wrote for today’s i newspaper about why - I think - you don’t see more girls doing maths. In short: it’s death by a thousand cuts. inews.co.uk/opinion/hannah…

@fchollet The catchy narratives ARE arbitrage between what actually works and what the uninformed would like it to be

There is a large discrepancy between the catchy narratives that people use to make sense of AI and its evolution, and what actually works and produces value. This is an arbitrage opportunity.

@Plinz Which conveniently ignores 7 million annual dead due to fossil fuel burning vs hundreds due to nuclear incidents annually. And then there is the climate change that is currently worrying billions of people.

@GeneticFractals Nuclear energy was largely abandoned due to the perception of the threat of accidents (which was fueled by terrible accidents that even UNSCEAR could not cover up completely). Also, liberal democracies cannot realistically expropriate the shareholders of major industries.

“Don’t look up” is meant to be a metaphor about how global warming is ignored by media and politics. The actual “don’t look up” moments are Covid-19 in January/February 2020, inflation in 2021, and AGI risk in 2022.

@Plinz The real don’t look up moment in the 80’s was a well funded deliberate oil lobby that managed to convince the world that nuclear energy was to be shelved for ever. We wouldn’t be I a climate crisis if that hadn’t happened.

This does not mean that global warming is not an issue. But the "don't look up" moment for global warming was in the late 1980ies, which is when Hollywood ignored it. Today, global warming is mainstream trope, and a movie about it does not get any Cassandra cred.

Most people in tech see their job as a way to make money and then retire. But you spend most of your time working! It shapes who you are and defines the mark you leave on the world. Your job is first and foremost your window of opportunity to grow, learn, and make an impact.

@stats_feed Price of lithium has gone to insane levels! Tesla might actually have to get into the mining & refining directly at scale, unless costs improve. There is no shortage of the element itself, as lithium is almost everywhere on Earth, but pace of extraction/refinement is slow.

To become sustainably interesting, an AI artist might have to acquire an identity, personality and history. How long until we see fully automated creative franchises that let us participate in a unique mission to explore the universe from the perspective of a non-human mind?

@danbri It’s European: slow and messy development. It has spawned hundreds of threads, some of which will work out for the sheer magnitude of investment. The key to all of this is making federated developments work. The EU is learning to do that, and they will.
