@Dr_M_Davis Buzz aldrin wrote a good book on solar sails powered by lasers that slingshot around the sun. There are other technologies coming soon too. But we will need normal rocket engine technology to get them into space for now

Even if we could get a spacecraft up to 20% the speed of light, it would only take us 21 years to get to Proxima Centauri. For an uncrewed probe, that would be acceptable. Then a little over 4 years for the information from that probe to be received by us on Earth. Incorporating AI to allow it to operate autonomously, it would be an opportunity to get a close-up view of a potentially habitable planet - Proxima B. The challenge is how do we accelerate a spacecraft up to 0.20 c?

@elonmusk is broadly correct - its not about the Sun leaving the main sequence and turning into a Red Giant in about 5 billion years time. Its about increases in solar luminosity and radiation changing Earth's environment in about a billion years time that makes this planet then uninhabitable - try no oceans! But, seriously, if we are not an interstellar civilisation - let alone multiplanetary - in about a billion years - then we are doing something seriously wrong.

The Australian Government has announced a AUD 95 million (USD 63 million) military assistance package for Ukraine. This includes a AUD 50 million contribution to PURL, AUD 2 million for the Drone Coalition, and AUD 43 million in military equipment, including tactical air-defence radars, munitions, and combat engineering assets. Ok I did some measurements on the Gilmour space launch, there's two engine failures, the first happens within two seconds of liftoff. It had accelerated to about 20km/h, it then maintains constant speed on 3 engines until a second engine fails about 5 seconds later. Then it falls back. In both cases there's fire still coming out the nozzle, but there's not enough chamber pressure to develop thrust.
