@GalefrostA @waffleswillapon my favorite souls bosses reflect this: i adore bayle, messmer, gael, etc; but will also go to the grave to defend examples like micolash, taurus & capra demon, fools idol, tower knight, adjudicator, leechmonger, etc. challenge and exploration should be more varied & expressive :)

@GnosticBeaumont @waffleswillapon tbf level design has never been particularly important in bosses save for the occasional obstacle that the boss can break to turn the arean into an uninterrupted flat field or gimmicks like the Dragon God hell, I think ER has done plenty of simple but creative stuff like-

the people that claim every er boss can be beaten the same way unlike ds1 bosses don’t know there’s 50 different types of stomp attacks. you can jump or run to the side or run to the front or dodge or run and THEN jump depending on what the boss design team was drinking that day

@GalefrostA @waffleswillapon (2) idk if you mean souls or broadly, but: level design has always been the frame that defines an enemy/boss encounter in games, and im strongly of the opinion that a boss shouldn't be thought of as just some isolated combat duel, and that the gimmick/duel binary is a disservice

@GalefrostA @waffleswillapon "level design has never been particularly important in bosses" is a philosophy that... I think should be countered. twitter is a really bad space for this kind of discussion unfortunately without coming off as a abrupt or rude so gimme a second to try and truncate. (1)

@GalefrostA @waffleswillapon Things like the presence of the pool of water in Rellana's arena /are/ cool, but it's a slight example; small percentile increases in dmg and resistance only for specific elements is only going to be relevant in a small minority of cases and does nothing architecturally.

@GalefrostA @waffleswillapon I do not agree to any degree. Verticality has always been exceptionally important in these games, and the presence of heavy grounding & restrictions on vertical movement don't contradict that, they emphasize it.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is still a very competent and widely available RPG in 2026 thanks to a dedicated fan-made project. That project is Daggerfall Unity, an open source recreation of Daggerfall in the Unity engine created by Gavin Clayton and Daggerfall Workshop. After 9 years of development, the game finally reached it's 1.0 release back in 2023. "Experience the adventure and intrigue of Daggerfall with all of its original charm along with hundreds of fixes, quality of life enhancements, and extensive mod support." I've played Daggerfall Unity off and on for a few years now and it's always a comfort to come back to. I highly recommend giving it a try!

@GnosticBeaumont @Zakguard This only applies to the game’s first half. Are we gonna pretend that areas like Lost Izalith, demon ruins, tomb of the giants, and the catacombs are good areas?

Conan ascended The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade is about to drop for Conan Exiles. It will not only bring visual improvements, but also introduce merged maps and reduce the client size from 120 GB to 40 GB.

@TForebringer Ty. It’s a mod it doesn’t know when the skybox is being rendered unless it’s reversed and then understood and a few more issues with normal map there which are fixed now

It's awesome how i can make an incredibly milquetoast critique of one of the most popular games of this decade and make its fanbase start seeing red because they refuse to accept it as anything less than a 10/10
Piggy@PiggyKropotkinn

Elden Ring is at a minimum 40x more “deliberate” and “methodical” than Dark Souls 1, but since it’s also faster paced people will call it “20 second crackhead boss combo spam” because their feeble weak minds cannot keep up
