This week at the @UN Climate Summit, I addressed world leaders: science is clear, we face a planetary crisis. Solutions exist. The window to a manageable climate future is still open, but just. Failure is not inevitable. It is a choice. Read more: pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest…

We are causing #globalwarming 100 times faster than past natural changes
We are taking Earth’s 🌎 climate beyond natural limits, with CO2 & temps levels not seen for 3 million years.

17.5 MILLION Hiroshima bombs worth of heat accumulated in the Mediterranean Sea from 2023 to 2024.
Sea Surface Temperatures increased more in the past 15 years than over the preceding 150 years.
On May 1st 2025 sulphur emissions from shipping will decrease again by about 80%

🌊🌡️📈 Looking into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, (the rate of) Ocean Heat Content (OHC) increase is off the chart: 'The Mediterranean Sea is the region showing the most intensive warming rate, with an area-averaged OHC increase of 0.41 GJ m² (1.1 ZJ) from 2023 to 2024'

Ventura County strawberry workers are harvesting in heavy smoke from the Hughes Fire. We remind workers their employers have to provide them with respirator masks if the AQI exceeds 150. Stay safe! #WeFeedYou

Big Oil raked in record-breaking profits. The companies that caused the climate crisis are getting rich as they fuel the fire.
@ExxonMobil: $55.7 billion
@Shell: $39.87 billion
@Chevron: $35.5 billion
@BP_plc: $27.7 billion
Time to make the pay for the damage they've caused.

If we switched to #renewableenergy, the number of ships crossing the ocean would fall by 40% because they're just carrying coal & oil & gas!! buff.ly/3JSuKOE

Turns out Shell has been selling cargoes of liquefied natural gas as “carbon neutral”, using carbon credits from projects which may have had no emissions-cutting activities at all
That’s reason number umpteenth why I had a chapter in my book entitled “Never Buy Carbon Offsets for Anything, Especially Your Car Gasoline”. We no longer have any time for playing games with voluntary carbon credits, CO2 indulgences created over 20 years ago to transition companies to actually reduce emissions by now. The transition period has been over for years: Close voluntary carbon markets

Every year, 3 billion trees, many from vital forests, are destroyed for paper packaging.
We have better solutions than cutting down climate & biodiversity critical forests to make a box. Implement them.
Not plastic, not paper — better.
