Maggie Smith, eh. What a life, what a career. No-one could arch an eyebrow like her. And so glad to have seen her last stage performance in A German Life. Great power. RIP.

@guychapman2 @British_Airways Oh dear Guy. In contrast to your experience we have travelled from Marseille this morning, changed in Paris and are on our way to London now by prompt, comfortable trains. Not possible everywhere but trains are SO nicer! Xx

Just had the second flight of the week cancelled by @British_Airways - I would increasingly struggle to even call this company second rate after a catalogue of delays and cancellations

A very old, very deep well beneath the floor of this hotel.

@JonBradfield a) I've never paid £130 for a pair of jeans in my life ( of course you haven't, I hear you say) b) buying a tent presumably means you have to sleep in the beastly thing.

I can't think of another product that's as weirdly good value as tents. This new one was £130. That's a pair of semi posh jeans.

My current mood at the end of a long week. Hooray for the weekend! Astoundingly, this timeless study of much needed "time out" was taken 117 years ago. The autochrome was photographed way back in 1907 by Alfred Stieglitz and speaks to us just as much today as it did in the Edwardian Era. (I wonder what might in her carafe? Pour me a glass please).... It's original colour and not colourised.

The "homemade limoncello" video is up there with the very best of the internet. 4 years later and I still laugh at it on every play.

@MrLukowski Of course. We have enough against us in the theatre. No point in tempting fate.

Judi Dench literally insisted I immediately leave the room and knock for readmission when I accidentally said ‘Macbeth’ to her during an interview so who is the snowflake now

@ivanhewett @domcavendish On the other hand, if like me you ask yourself the question, "Should we see the second half or go and have a meal?" you can rescue the evening and try again with another play, another day.

@domcavendish Didn’t his father Kingsley tell the story of emerging into the foyer of the Oxford Playhouse in the interval of something, asking himself ‘Am I enjoying myself? No I’m bored witless’, and walked out. And never went to the theatre again. Like father like son!

Lynn Barber: "I never go to the theatre. (Was it Martin Amis who said why go to the theatre when you can stand on a street corner in the rain and watch the cars go by? My feelings precisely.)"
