Yes, India needs it's imports, but so does Europe. No country is 100% self reliant. That's the reason why present day governments maintain good relations with each other.

@VictorButter1 After independence in 1947, India was not in a condition to feed its population and was dependant on foreign food aid. Then in 1960s the government started the following revolutions to increase food production. Now India exports food products worth $ 50 billion.
