@sam_gzstrength Some more gripes: - Elbows behind the wrists on OHP - Bar not touching the chest on bench - Too wide DL grip/stance - Bouncing DLs off the floor - Not pushing the butt back on RDLs - Not locking out RDL/DL properly

@wolfstrength What's your take on double progression, i.e. Week 1: 3 reps Week 2: 4 reps Week 3: 5 reps Week 4: Increase weight and go back to 3 reps

A lot of people are incredulous that one set of five reps in the deadlift, once per week, can drive progress. But we have tens of thousands of people we've coached who have done exactly this as Novices, for months. But what happens when that stops working? ⬇️

Before I was a coach, I was a janitor at MIT. I worked mostly at night and would go around the building solving complex math equations while I cleaned. One day I got caught and was forced to go talk Robin Williams every week about my feelings as punishment. Mostly we talked about bench press and my love of apples. When I got into some legal trouble the judge gave me a choice: go to jail or become a Starting Strength Coach.

@wolfstrength On a leg press, hack squat or pendulum squat, there's no need to stay balanced over midfoot so you can descend as far as hip flexion allows. On a loaded squat you have to stay balanced, but you can't allow any buttwink or loss of tightness at the bottom, which limits the depth.

I low bar squat to an inch or two below parallel, and very purposely don’t go deeper (except for an occasional rep where I screw up). Not ass to grass, by intentional design. But I hack squat quite deep. Why? Best answer gets a virtual tootsie roll.

There is a toxic type of person to avoid— the kind obsessed with hierarchy, constantly ranking everyone: net worth, IQ, number of publications,academic titles & citations, cycling FTP, 5K running speed, education, etc. They are miserable & want you to be miserable too.

@jranoyes I'd love to see investment in longitudinal data infrastructure - using data linkage, admin data, consumption and financial data, operator data, treatment data, etc. That would be a huge step-change in the ability to inform and evaluate policy, even with the most basic analysis.

@jranoyes Before econometrics and data science can be deployed, we need much better data infrastructure. Little point employing ever more sophisticated methods on limited datasets. But building new data assets is expensive, time consuming, dry, and doesn't look as good on CVs as citations.

🚨 NEW STUDY 🚨 Pupils excluded from school are 2.3× more likely to die by suicide, even after adjusting for other risk factors. New @SwanseaUni study carried out by Margaret Diogu, Sze Chim Lee, Marcos Del Pozo Baños, Olivier Y. Rouquette, PhD and @ProfAnnJohn and the teams at @adr_uk and the @wolfsoncentre, using data from 580K pupils in Wales links exclusion to elevated suicide risk. 🧠 Study calls for long-term, multi-agency support strategies for excluded pupils - and for better use of school attendance data to identify unmet needs early. 📄 Read the full paper: lnkd.in/erf9ZkSS #SuicidePrevention #EdResearch #YouthMentalHealth

@engineers_feed Let a = hypotenuse of triangle next to blue square; b = hypotenuse of triangle next to pink square; c = hypotenuse of triangle next to green square. ⇒ b^2 = (2^2) + (1^2) = 5 ⇒ b = √5 ⇒ a = √5, c = (3√5)/2 ⇒ (a + b + c) = 3√5 Area = (a + b + c)^2 = (3√5)^2 = 45.

Math puzzle. On the left side the square rests on a square with side 1.5, and on the right side on three squares of sides 1, 2, 3. The top square’s top left corner is coincident with the tilted square’s corner, and the squares of sides 2 and 3 are aligned on the right side.

@wolfstrength I remember when "put your lats in your back pocket" was all the rage as a deadlift cue. Still not sure what it means.

Do the lats play a key role in keeping the bar on your legs during a deadlift? Yes. Do I cue "lats" to my lifters? Generally not. If I'm teaching you how to drive, I don't say "plantar flex your ankle to depress the gas pedal." I just say "push the gas pedal," and by doing so, you'll plantar flex your ankle without even knowing what plantar flexion is. Similarly, I start with "keep the bar on your legs," for the deadlift. It usually works, without the lifter even knowing what his lats are. If it doesn't work, we can use some other action oriented cues, but I find "LATS!" to be one of the most useless cues that's commonly deployed. It correctly identifies the problem but rarely fixes it for the lifter. And that's what a cue is supposed to do - fix the issue, no bonus points for correctly identifying it.
