This Memorial Day, we honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their legacy is etched in the 250 years of American freedom they defended.

For 25 years I served alongside men and women who were willing to give everything for the country we all love. Some did. As a Navy veteran, I think about them not just today but every time I visit a military base, every time I meet a Gold Star family, every time I come home to Gabby. Memorial Day is for them and for the families who carry that loss every day. Thank you for your service. It’s not forgotten.

@AlexRMcColl Same reason why RCAF cannot suppress fires from the air. As was told many times while serving, civilian contractors would lose jobs. Poss another reason GoC will not estb quick reaction force of water bombers. Political Votes over safety of resources and lives.

I have long said we should emulate some of our European NATO allies and make water bombing an RCAF mission. This would count towards NATO spending, take a financial burden off the Provinces, and provide the new Calgary DHC-515 production line with a major order.

@AlexRMcColl @MikeTheNavyGuy1 About 30 years ago, 80% RAF cadets joined Reserve or Regular Forces. 19-21 year old Cadets are categorised as Adult Cadets assisting with training. They also received more advance training on flying.

@MikeTheNavyGuy1 I remember being shocked at how zero CAF recruiting is directed towards the Cadet system. Going from nothing to a half-assed effort would get lots of cadets to sign up. That said, on-boarding bottlenecks; not a lack of recruits, is the current limiting factor.

This is a terrible read and ignores a shit tonne of outreach outside the Snowbirds. Defense at the dock, open base days. Freedom of the city parades. And so much more. This article might have been accurate in the late 90s. Not so much now.
The Walrus@thewalrus

For more than fifty years, the Snowbirds gave millions of Canadians their only direct encounter with the military. Now, as the team stands down, their absence reveals how removed the armed forces have become from Canadian life. thewalrus.ca/the-snowbirds-…

THE MESSAGE TO NATO. The Oreshnik is a nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). It was launched from Kapustin Yar, and Putin has publicly stated that it is extremely difficult to intercept. Its deployment seems intended more as a signal to NATO, showcasing a capability that Western air defenses would find hard to counter, than as a weapon meant primarily to cause direct military damage to Ukraine. This is the third combat use of the missile since the start of the war (after November 2024 and January 2026), and each time it has been a deliberate and calculated act.

The Laker News - Pat Healey 🇨🇦@ReprtrPatHealey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Line of Duty Death – Firefighter Alexandru Uichita Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department – May 21, 2026 It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department announces the line of duty death of our brother, Firefighter Alexandru Uichita, age 40, who passed away on the evening of Thursday, May 21, 2026, during wildfire suppression operations in Moschelle, Annapolis County. While engaged in firefighting operations, Alex suffered a sudden medical episode. Members on scene responded immediately, but despite every effort, Alex could not be revived. He spent his final moments surrounded by his brothers and sisters in the fire service, serving the community he cared so deeply about. Alex joined our department on November 27, 2024, and had already become one of the most beloved members of our family. In that time, he left a mark on every single one of us. His charisma lit up every room he walked into. A quiet leader who was kind, dependable and his willingness to help – no matter the task, no matter the hour – was without limit. He was the kind of person who showed up, every time, for everyone. Alex had recently begun his Firefighter 1010 course through the Annapolis County Fire Service Association, and his dedication to growing as a firefighter reflected exactly who he was as a person – someone who always wanted to give more. We are devastated. There are no words adequate for the loss we are feeling today, and we know that feeling is shared by so many who had the privilege of knowing Alex. His loss is deeply felt by his fellow firefighters, his friends, and the wider community he served with such dedication and pride. The Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to Alex’s beloved wife, their three young children and all of his loved ones. The department stands with them in grief and in gratitude for his service. We ask that the public please respect the privacy of his family during this incredibly difficult time as they begin to navigate life without him. The Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department extends our deepest gratitude to the mutual aid departments and agencies who assisted with the medical care on scene alongside us: Annapolis Royal Volunteer Fire Department, Lawrencetown Volunteer Fire Department, Digby Volunteer Fire Department, Bear River Volunteer Fire Department, Emergency Health Services (EHS), the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Your presence and support on scene and in the hours since has meant more to us than we can express. Our flags have been lowered to half-mast in honour of Firefighter Uichita, and we humbly ask that others do the same. Details regarding the memorial service and any related events will be shared once they are confirmed in consultation with the family. Those wishing to offer financial support to the family are asked to please note that all donations will be managed and collected by the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department through the department treasurer and leadership. No donations will be accepted through any crowdfunding or online donation platforms. Further donation instructions will be shared by the department directly. E-transfers can be sent to treasurer@bridgetownfire.ca, or cheques may be made payable to the Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department, with 100% of all funds going directly to Alex’s family. Media inquiries may be directed to bridgetownfire@bridgetownfire.ca. Rest easy Alex, we’ll take it from here

@NoahGairn This really depends on how we're going to staff them, and I've expressed in the past that I don't see a way we can staff a mixed fleet -- so I can't guess at what the solution might be. That aside, I think there's growing appetite to bring units back into major cities. 1/2

@AlexRMcColl @ThomasWatsonCD No argument, seen many stds across Cda in all categories. When integration arrived, 3 separate uniforms shoved into tri-service green, CF did consider CIC staff wearing a grey colour uniform, red rank bars. Very odd combo, thank goodness design was rejected.

@HayesRayo @ThomasWatsonCD While I appreciate that, to be frank, it's the same dress and decorum standards. The vast majority of the CIC officers I met at Trenton held themselves to a higher standard than some of the Senior Reg Force Officers we met there (the creepy one is currently in prison for life).

I get that some folks like to poop all over CIC Officer training. It really doesn’t seem like a few weeks of training can provide much. On the other hand my university PLAR’d my CIC training and experience as B.Ed equivalent for admissions to a Masters over 10 years ago…
