A thread on how Canada can respond to tariffs by cutting the F35A order in half and buying the runner-up F39E to serve as the bulk of Canada's air power over the next 40 years. Using my slides from a previous RCAF Association debate & research from my @policy_school thesis.

Must be fake news, using an F-16 (that can’t even MADL with F35s) for a NORAD mission!? Jokes aside, the Americans are upgrading over 600 F-16s. There are less expensive ways of flying the NORAD mission. A mixed fleet, that includes Gripens, makes sense. Gripens can do this job.
North American Aerospace Defense Command@NORADCommand

NORAD recently executed Exercise AMALGAM MUTE, a no‑notice, live‑fly training event - this time over the Alaskan region - designed to validate rapid response capabilities across the command. Check out the speed, precision and professionalism with which Alaskan NORAD Region assets quickly launched and conducted a successful intercept of an airborne track of interest as simulated by #USAF C-21 aircraft. No notice. No hesitation. Always ready. #WeHaveTheWatch

@BagelPolling $46k/yr in savings, plus the positive equity growing as the mortgage is paid. I get the “feeling broke” feeling that comes with responsible savings rates; but that’s not the same as actually living paycheque to paycheque.

Over the past 20 years, I've seen tides rise and fall on personalities and pundits and influencers. Those who stick around either get really good at riding those waves (and most do wash out), or they build their own immovable, small and craggy islands in the sea.

To my Conservative influencer friends. I say this with affection. The tide is turning. If you've built your following by parroting niche US talking points Blaming Canada over the last six months, you're soon going to find yourself naked on the beach.

@NoahGairn Band’s getting back together (almost, iirc team Gripen was originally Standard Aero for engine support).

@Prominent_Bryan Indeed, made even worse by the simple fact that multiple European PR systems regularly elect MORE Conservative Governments than FPTP does in Canada. Ireland has had nothing but centre-right & right-wing coalitions since switching to PR-STV.

@alexcerne @Mill_Moron They’re also objectively wrong. Plenty of European PR systems elect Conservative Prime Ministers more often than our FPTP system. Irish PR-STV has elected virtually nothing but right-wing and centre-right leadership.

@Mill_Moron Unfortunately there are PR advocates that also use that exact same talking point as a positive. Most notably probably Elizabeth May.

@TheRealKeean The last false majority in Ireland was the last election they had under FPTP; it benefited the Left. They’ve had nothing but right-wing & centre-right coalition governments since. There are plenty of European PR systems that elect Conservatives more often than our FPTP voting.

@TheRealKeean Federally, Conservatives have had 1 majority in 30 years and despite hundreds of thousands of CPC voters in Ottawa, you lost every seat in the city, forcing your leader into a costly Alberta by-election. FPTP shafts Conservatives too. Stop hoping for a lucky dice roll.

@Mill_Moron Why would a Conservative support Irish-Style PR-STV election reform. It’s not like Ireland has elected nothing but various right-wing and centre-right coalitions since switching to PR, eh? Oh… wait… that’s backwards.

@NoahGairn We should have HSR. That said, we shouldn’t make a zig zag route. The right answer is a long-term (France-like) plan of constant building and expansion. Start with the express route for Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal; when that’s up and running, shift to secondary routes & extensions.

@jeff_marsh @ostap_yyc Regulations demanding larger front setbacks and permeable landscaping obviously restrict the options for front porches. I would propose we repeal those restrictions and allow for shorter setbacks and less permeable coverage. There are no solutions, only tradeoffs.

@ostap_yyc No! A front porch where you can actually chat with your neighbors as they walk by is so much better. It would just be nice for these Calgarians if they had some semblance of a porch to do that from not just two tiny lawn chairs wedged under the mailbox.

The only way to enjoy the beautiful outdoor weather when you live in an R-CG four + four! So much emphasis is placed on supply and affordability yet from a day-to-day perspective for the people who actually call these units home "livability" is actually what's truly important!

@ValkStrategy @davidpugliese I don’t think we could terminate for cause given the loose terms of the JSF partnership. That said, we could walk away with only 30 F35s with no penalty. And yes, we have an AG report on how DND deliberately cooked the books on F35 costing in the FFCP review.

@davidpugliese Because "our pilots must have the best" is an easy drum to bang, but you want to avoid pointing out that the RCAF cooked the books (which they blatantly did). So let the Americans keep being buttholes you don't want to trust.

@AlexRMcColl Only large major powers like Sweden can afford to buy 130 fighters and can train enough pilots. There's no way Canada could possibly afford 130 fighters and it would be impossible to train enough pilots. Silly to think we'd ever be as big as Sweden when it comes to air power

If Sweden can have a mixed fleet of 130 fighter jets, then why can’t Canada? Military leaders need to make it happen, not lament how too much money and political support makes their jobs more complicated.
HenrikJ@nHenrikJ

"the Swedish government plans to purchase another 12 Gripen Es, expanding fleet to 72. The 16 Gripens being donated to Kyiv will come from the surplus 40 aircraft being withdrawn from service, leaving Sweden's fighter fleet to grow to around 130 aircraft" aviationweek.com/defense/budget…
