Attitude is a choice. Gratitude is a discipline. Bitterness is expensive. Nobody accidentally has a great attitude. Nobody stumbles into gratitude. And nobody means to end up bitter, it just quietly moves in when you stop choosing something better. Guard your peace like it cost you something. Because it did.

More evidence that reading volume matters to reading achievement. In this case, also an intriguing model for increasing reading volume by sending books home with underprivileged students.

In 2016 Norway gave every 5-year-old child an iPad. Within a few years, Norway's reading scores plummeted and dropped below the OECD average. They ranked dead last out of 65 countries. Now Norway is spending millions of dollars to reverse this trend and get people reading.

@clairlemon @BradWilcoxIFS Yes! Family life is often easier & less stressful when both parents don’t work full-time. Also, listen to the mother in the video below. She erased male protagonists in stories & replaced them with females. We need both genders to succeed @jean_twenge @drantbradley @LisaBritton

Gavin Newsom’s wife on how she raises her kids: “I've given our boys dolls…if I'm reading a book and the protagonist is a male, I just change the 'he' to a 'she.'” x.com/mazemoore/stat…

Children in the West grow up seeing their own working mothers tired, worn out, & burdened by the second shift. From the outside careerism often looks glamorous--but children get to see it from the inside x.com/BradWilcoxIFS/…

"By 2024, 3 out of 4 boys and half of girls don’t disagree w/ the idea that it’s best if men are the achievers & women take care of the home and family. Those numbers are all-time highs in the history of the survey." @jean_twenge

🚨 BREAKING: Outrage is erupting after ANOTHER Minnesota fraudster gets a short prison sentence — "Zamzam Jama" gets just SIX MONTHS She was involved in a $5.6M scheme that included her family, and was directly responsible for around $500K What a FREAKING DISGRACE! This only ENCOURAGES more fraud if all you get is six months. 📽️ @LouNewsMan

BREAKING: The Chicago Bulls are waiving Jaden Ivey after he spoke out against the NBA for promoting 'Pride Month' and unrighteousness, according to ESPN. Ivey recently announced that he was alive in Christ. "They proclaim Pride Month in the NBA. They show it to the world. They say, 'Come join us for Pride Month to celebrate unrighteousness.'" "They proclaim it on the billboards, they proclaim it in the streets, unrighteousness." He said nothing wrong.

@drantbradley @madefordominion I agree with you 100%! In some (not all!) dual income families they don’t do a lot of cooking so the kids never learn to cook. We know families that literally do drive-through dinners most nights, for example. In some cases, dual income families also have cleaning/laundry help.

Wait, what? Why aren’t they doing this at home already? What kind of parents don’t have their kids doing laundry at home, cleaning, etc? Why do you need a camp to teach kids things parents should be teaching at home anyway? Or, is this like “home ec” like I had in middle-school?
Lenore Skenazy@FreeRangeKids

A Chicago mom started a "REAL WORLD" summer camp: Kids go to grocery, laundry, even a cemetery. And they find their way via public transit. THE KIDS LOVE IT! The parents are GRATEFUL! The clothes are CLEAN! letgrow.org/real-world-sum…

An ICE agent jumped in to save a 1-year-old at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security shared in a video on X. DHS said the agent who was stationed near the security checkpoint performed "a Heimlich maneuver that restored the infant’s breathing after nearly two minutes." Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin responded to the rescue on social media, saying "if our agent had not been there and stepped up, this could have been a tragic outcome."

@mattyglesias Even if you go to a school with high income kids, learning outcomes & curriculums can be ineffective. People don’t realize this because parents who can afford it, pay for tutors. We need to improve the curriculum at schools. Some teachers aren’t even taught how to teach phonics.
missy purcell@MissyPurcell

It should never take a parent knowing more than the school to make sure their child learns to read. But sadly, that’s still the reality for far too many families. We need knowledgeable leaders who are willing to face the evidence and finally put ineffective practices like Reading Recovery behind us for good.

It's not just phonics: Schools have failed to teach reading because they ignore 50+ years of findings in cognitive psychology that reading depends on general knowledge. ED Hirsch has been banging this drum for a long time but Ed Schools shut their ears because the whole idea was unromantic & had a vaguely right-wing aroma. Now he joins with Dan Willingham to make a strong case that kids can't read if they don't have the background knowledge that makes sense of the rarer vocabulary, allusions, and understandings that allow us to read between the lines - which all reading requires. educationnext.org/rediscovering-…

@ajlamesa The Great Lakes region is gorgeous. Lakes, pine trees, 4 seasons etc. Wisconsin is pretty well run, but Minnesota has extensive fraud. There are many whistleblowers on *both sides* of the aisle in Minnesota talking about all of the fraud!
Robert Lufkin MD@robertlufkinmd

Dramatic increase in autism program utilization in Minnesota. Is this a true increase in autism rates or some other reporting/diagnosis factor or just fraud? Are other states seeing this? (This is not a political question).

@oliviajune82 Yes! Kids are not learning social studies, civics, history, or science! In addition, “social emotional learning” SEL is also replacing science and social studies. School districts need content & knowledge rich curriculum that uses paper, pencil & books w/ a lot of non-fiction.
