@NotPotBol All of this is due to Mao Zedong. Anyone who has a deep understanding of the Chinese revolution would come to this conclusion. Mao's life was an incredible one. He was so successful that his enemies still deeply resent him decades after his passing.

一昔前は英語圏の中国研究者も日本語の先行研究読んで勉強してました。昔の英語の中国研究の研究書や論文には史学雑誌や汲古書院が大量に引用されたりしてます。その名残で今でも米国では中国研究の博士院生に日本語学習が一応義務づけられてること多いですが、残念ながらすでにほぼ形骸化しています。

隣接領域の人間として日本の中国研究は特別だなと思います。「自国研究」ではないのに、高い水準であり、日本語の論文・著作が「本国」で中国語に翻訳され、読まれているという。英語論文で国際査読誌に掲載されることを目標とする学術領域からすれば、想像を越えた異様なものなのではとも。
