Boomers act like property taxes are some massive burden when it's only a few thousand per year in the vast majority of places. It's the equivalent of coming up with a couple hundred bucks a month. These are the people lecturing you about buying a sandwich.

For reference, Minneapolis has the same average summer highs as Barcelona and lower winter lows than Moscow.
European weather is unbelievably mild, all things considered. Most of the rest of the world has far more natural disasters AND far more temperature variation.

People throw around the phrase “the European mind cannot comprehend ____” too much, except here it actually totally applies. The European mind cannot, in fact, comprehend tornados.

worst flight of my life on @lufthansa
attendant spills ginger ale on me at takeoff. ok, accidents happen
hours later another attendant spills HOT tea on me. i get burned. clothes, seat, everything soaked
i ask for a dry seat. crew manager arrives 30 min later YELLING at me
i ask for compensation. she finger-points telling me to shut up and that she'll have me DETAINED on landing
i start crying. she takes me to the galley to offer "a solution"
the solution: a 5€ voucher to clean my clothes
i tell her i'm recording. she switches to german to keep yelling and told me that i can't record
i have video. but i'd rather not post me crying with my burnt leg out here
then on my connection flight they charged me for the carry-on that was included and approved on my previous lufthansa flight. that lady was also rude
seems like lufthansa only hires disrespectful people

The Eighty Years' War didn't last 80 years.
The Seven Years' War didn't last 7 years.
But the Thirty Years' War, by some bizarre coincidence, actually lasted exactly 30 years. We need to amend this situation and start calling it the Fifty Years' War, or something.

@junker_jo I don’t know if there’s some ideal that says being with 1 caregiver for 3 years is better than any other alternative, but I can’t imagine it makes any substantial difference when I know many happy, well adjusted people who had a variety of caregivers as babies/toddlers.🤷♀️

Everybody in the world wants an elegant and progressive solution to the maternity leave problem and there simply isn’t one. Babies need their mothers for 3 years and businesses need workers who don’t leave for 3 years. The only solution would have been to not create the problem.

8 weeks of maternity leave isn’t enough. Neither is 3 months, 6 months or 1 year. Attachment theory research shows that babies need their primary caregiver (most often mom) far longer than a few months, ideally for the first 3 years. Longer maternity leave leads to better mother-infant interactions which results in a more secure attachment at 24 months. Babies are so sensitive that even any mother-baby separation for more than a week (1 week!) under the age of 2 has been shown to predict higher child negativity at age 3 and higher aggression at both age 3 and age 5. You can never convince me that anything about women working corporate jobs is natural.

Mamdani is right. Reagan was wrong. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is not "scary." What about if you're lost in a forest? What if your house is on fire? Public sector workers are incredibly useful in some of our most difficult situations. Government is good.
