How lucky we are to experience boring, ordinary, uneventful days. Somewhere in the world, that kind of safety is unimaginable.

I owe an apology to all the women I thought were bitter while their husbands seemed so easygoing. Now I know it is very easy to be easygoing when someone else is carrying the entire weight of your life.

Today, APHRC alongside @KELINKenya, @IILAinfo, @KenyaNCCK, and @NCDAllianceKe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking the official launch of the Food Policy Coalition Kenya. In his remarks, APHRC’s Director of Programs, Synergy, Dr. Anthony Mveyange, emphasized that "Umoja ni nguvu, utengano ni udhaifu" — Unity is strength, calling for more collaborative efforts to address the burden of Non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The coalition comes at a critical moment in Kenya, with the Ministry of Health reporting that NCDs account for 43.5% of deaths and over 50% total hospital admissions. Together, the Coalition will push to promote and advance food environment policies that protect all persons in Kenya from diet-related NCDs, including but not limited to: ✅ Restrictions on marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages to children ✅ A Front-of-Pack Warning Labelling (FOPWL) system APHRC is working with partners to ensure food policies in Kenya protect the health and well-being of its people. #IamAPHRC #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch #FoodPolicy #EAC #NCDs #HealthyFoodEnvironments @ckyobutungi @amveyange @shukrifmohamed @hope_shete @gershim_asiki @KiruiCaliph1, @NicholasEtyang @CharityWaweru @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah

Diet-related diseases are rising fast across Eastern Africa, and the food environment has been identified as a major driver. #IamAPHRC’s researchers have spent the past five years building the evidence base for food environment policies in Kenya, from front-of-pack warning labels and junk food marketing restrictions to sugar taxes and healthier food in schools and hospitals. APHRC’s work is part of a growing regional push for healthier food environments. The vision is simple: ✅ Consumers walk into any shop, glance at a label, and instantly know what they are buying. ✅ A food industry that reformulates products to meet health standards. ✅ Ultimately, a generation of young people will be better protected from harmful food environments. Follow the link below to hear directly from the researcher driving this work. We don’t just need more data. We need to use it better. #IamAPHRC’s Countdown to 2030 for Women's Children's and Adolescents' initiative has been engaging delegates at the ongoing International Maternal Newborn Health Conference 2026 (IMNHC 2026), calling for a shift from measuring maternal and newborn health coverage to managing systems. Countries need more than data as well as the capacity, institutional space, and political support to interpret it, use it, and act on it. The Countdown to 2030 team has gone beyond producing analyses to strengthening countries' capacity to turn evidence into priorities, plans, accountability, and action. Every dataset represents a decision waiting to be made. In the end, it’s not data that saves lives. It’s what we do with it. #IMNHC2026 #APHRCResearch @Countdown2030 @gatesfoundation @alignmnh @TheGFF @CARTAfrica @CKyobutungi @amveyange @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @dia_diama @MalickS97 @SyllaElHadjiMa1 @deekagwii @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah @njerimbuthia @Chris_Maero @ChristineGer22 @Hope_shete @MuliDavis @Wekesah @CharityWaweru @Waithaka_KE @isabelmutuku1 @Liz_Kimani @FlorahKarimi @cwkabiru @agnes_kiragga

🌍 The East African Community (EAC) is taking a bold step towards healthier food systems. This week, #IamAPHRC convened regional policymakers, researchers, and public health experts to discuss the development of a common Nutrient Profile Model for the region. As diet-related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) continue to rise and cross-border food trade expands across the EAC, there's a growing need for a unified regional approach to food regulation — one that protects public health. A harmonized food regulation EAC approach means: ✅ Consistent regulatory action on unhealthy foods across borders ✅ Shared expertise for stronger, evidence-based outcomes ✅ Food policies that are gender-responsive and equitable by design. #FoodPolicy #EAC #NCDs #HealthyFoodEnvironments #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica @IDRC_CRDI @MOH_Kenya @UNICEFKenya @ckyobutungi @amveyange @shukrifmohamed @hope_shete @gershim_asiki @KiruiCaliph1 @mwijne @NicholasEtyang @CharityWaweru @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @DorcasOdhiambo @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah
