@SebAaltonen depends on if the license is share-alike or not, but many of the most common ones are not (BSD, MIT, Apache, etc). it's mostly just GPL and it's derivatives that require the same license for derivative work, but you'd have to challenge it in court to see if an LLM qualifies

@orlowdev @softwarevlogger @SebAaltonen having a project be unlicensed is a perfectly valid option, it would arguably be "source available" not open source at that point though, so yeah it would be illegal to copy the code without permission (at least as far as US copyright law is concerned)

I do not understand ice dispensers in hotels. I've never needed ice whilst staying at one, yet every hotel tells you where the ice machine is. Then I see people filling those little buckets. What are you all doing with the ice? Am I missing something?

They sell high dynamic range (the amount of detail visible in light and shadows) as a feature of digital but it’s really a bug. More detail isn’t always better. It’s why movies look cartoonish now and everyone looks so haggard in photos without filters.

Valve is getting praise after helping a first-time indie developer instead of rejecting their game at the last minute.
The developer accidentally uploaded a broken build that wouldn’t launch just before the Steam Next Fest deadline.
Instead of rejecting it, a Steam reviewer found the problem, fixed the game’s configuration, and approved the build in time for the event.
Other indie developers also shared that Valve has done the same for their games

@CartoonsHateHer I struggled a lot with food as a kid (and still do as an adult) and I can say that I do really appreciate my mom being so accommodating. I'm sure it was difficult for her, but I really think it's the only reason I've been able to improve my relationship with food as an adult.

@TheRealKitty019 @WilliamSchaub8 unless you're buying used, you can't get an 8TB HDD for less than $250 right now. the price of hard drives has skyrocketed in the last few years. when I bought 8TB drives in 2020 they were $145 a piece. plus factor in the machine you're putting them in and your new NAS is $1400+

When it comes to cloud *anything* I'm a turbo-luddite.
I don't expect companies to steal or harvest anything, no, I just expect them to be fucking incompetent. $10/mo for how many years to get cloud storage, or spend $600 on 24tb of hard drive redundancies. If I need to store anything for five or more years, why would I ever rent cloud storage? Especially now that tech companies are using AIs to trawl them for anything the business doesn't like, and using them for training data.
And no, the problem people have with datacentres is that they're associated with tech that is objectively, measurably making the average person's life worse by just existing. The average person can't really parse this and isn't knowledgeable enough to differentiate, so when their consumer luxuries get more expensive and they're told it's because AI, and the AI needs a datacentre in their backyard so it can grow but that datacentre might fuck up the watershed and will produce a low hum 24/7 that's audible for miles, yeah no shit they'll get their hackles up and react on pure emotion, rejecting it all outright and refusing to listen to arguments.
And why the hell would they listen to the techbros' arguments when any time they voice discontent through official channels, city council meetings for example, they get shut down?

Genuinely believe that most anti-data center people think that when your data is backed up into the “cloud” that it’s in the aether. It’s just floating around waiting to be zapped back onto your hard drive

@Yureitan @lauriewired I have a NAS and a Proxmox sever that run 24/7 too, and even including those it works out to under 75 cents a day worth of power to keep them all idling, I definitely use my PC for more hours a day than the average person though

@Yureitan @lauriewired a lot of them (not all) work in a tech related field, sure, but honestly doing the math on how much power my PC uses at idle, it only costs me like 30 cents a day to run it, so I've just never felt the need to turn it off, if you only use it for gaming that would be different tho

If a gamer spends $500 on a GPU, uses it for 3 years, but it’s only fully active ~5% of that period…the cost-per relative FLOP hour is crazy high! Meanwhile, a $50,000 datacenter GPU might have a *LOWER* cost-per FLOP hour just because the effective utilization is 90+%.

I find the economical side of this argument funny. When I was a kid, I obviously had no money to buy a computer and I went to a cafe to play games. With cloud gaming, I have higher latency and I am essentially paying to make compute hardware more expensive.

@iamcs2kitchen cloud compute is generally only useful if you wanna do stuff on a hardware you were not able to ever possess, but nvidia and other cloud providers found out that they can just create an entire market by stripping you out of the initial thing you wanted, your own Personal Computer

Some hardware is expensive. Like when I am training a big model, I would not be using my gpus at home. I will be using various cloud services to train my model. Now we are expanding more things away from consumers. If all compute is centralised they become the owners of our future
