Amid war, the Islamic Republic has executed three young protesters, Saleh Mohammadi, 19, a national wrestling champion, Mehdi Ghasemi, and Saeed Davoudi, following January protests in Qom, with the intention to instill fear and deter further protests. This marks the first known executions linked to the most recent nationwide uprising that led to the murder of tens of thousands and the arrest of hundreds of thousands. They were sentenced after sham trials, with reports of torture, forced confessions broadcast on state TV, denial to choose their own lawyers, closed-door proceedings, and no right to appeal. Authorities charged them with “moharebeh”, or “waging war against God”, alongside vague accusations such as “inciting violence” and “acting against national security.” The right to protest is a fundamental human right. A state that executes its own citisens for dissent cannot be treated as legitimate. The EU’s decision to proscribe the IRGC is a major victory for #humanrights.
