Your 14 year old daughter comes home from school and says, “Mom & Dad, I’m Trans. I’m actually a boy. And I’m going to change my name from Tanya to Tony.” Mom: “Wow! How long have you believed this?” Daughter: “For a few weeks. I’ve been nervous about telling you.” Dad: “Have you spoken to any of your teachers & counselors about this?” Daughter: “A couple of my teachers. My English teacher was very encouraging. Remember: she’s the one who hates Trump. But my Biology teacher kind of looked at me in disbelief and asked me very, very quietly, ‘Are you sure, honey?’ But I think I’m sure!” Mom: “Sweetie, are you aware that a decades long study by John Hopkins showed that only one in 30,000 women have genuine, diagnosable Gender Dysphoria. In children under 18 years it’s very rare.” Daughter: “That can’t be true! Several of my friends were girls and now they are Trans!” Dad: “Were they actually diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria? Could it be simple peer pressure? Wanting to fit in?” Daughter: “I don’t know! You make it sound like it’s a mental illness! My English teacher told us it’s a choice!” Mom: “If you go through with, are you aware that you will be faced with a lifetime of hormone replacement therapies, as well as multiple, really expensive surgeries to remove your sexual organs? Daughter: “No one told me this! They just said you take a pill.” Dad: “Honey, are you also aware that a significant number of children & teens who decide to do this change their minds after they become adults; but by that time it’s usually too late. And from that point on they will likely never be able to bear their own children.” Daughter: “I didn’t know this about not being able to bear children. No one told me.” Mom: “Sweetie, you’ve studied reproductive health in school. And we discussed the ‘Birds & the Bees’ when you were young. Plus, I know you’ve read many books and seen romantic movies. So when I say, ‘sexual pleasure’, do you sort of have idea about what I’m referring to?” Daughter: “Mom!” Mom: “Well?” Daughter: “Well, sort of.” Mom: “Do you know that sexual pleasure is one of greatest gifts that humans can experience and share with each other? It’s one of those special God- given gifts that makes life worthwhile. Would you like to experience that someday?” Daughter: “Well, yeah. Duh! Of course.” Mom: “Sweetie, I hate to break this to you. But if you go through with this, the doctors, at some point, are going to cut off your breasts, leaving horrible scars. But worse, they will remove your uterus, ovaries, vagina and clitoris, your primary source of sexual pleasure. So from now, until you are old & gray, you will never be able to enjoy real sexual pleasure, missing out on a very important part of human existence. Did you consider this?” Daughter: “My Teacher didn’t explain any of this! All she said was that gender was a social construct and that we should choose for ourselves!” Dad: “Honey, you got an A in biology. You studied human anatomy & DNA. Are X & Y chromosomes, the difference between male & female genitalia and the fact that only women can bear children truly ‘social constructs’?” Daughter: “I guess not. But I really think I might be a boy!” Mom: “Honey, have you ever considered how wonderful it is that God created man & woman, male & female, each with their own unique & beautiful characteristics?” Daughter: “The human body really is beautiful. We studied da Vinci in art class. But sometimes I don’t feel beautiful.” Dad: “You will, honey. Give it time.” Daughter, crying: “I don’t know what to do.” Mom: “Why don’t we wait until you are at least 18, and you are really sure what you want to do?” Daughter: “I think I’m going to wait.” Dad: “And perhaps you should consider finding new friends.” Daughter: “Yeah, they’re a little weird. My dog Chuck is a rescue. Was abused. Bit 3 people when we first got him. I've paid $ for their medical bills. Would kill chickens if he had the chance. Still, I'd never advocate for him being shot. (Edited to add: the rescue org paid thousand$ for a behaviorist for him and I've spent hundreds of hours reinforcing that training and he hasn't bitten anyone in the 6 years since. I don't allow children to play with him either.) If Noem raised Cricket from birth and he was like that, that's a Noem problem.
