There's so many misconceptions about the new VRC avatar gating feature. - No, it wont stop you from joining. It turns your avatar into a fallback. - I largely only see this being used in crowded event spaces. In these spaces, many of these groups literally do this already and noone bats an eye. - Some features of avatar ranks may not make sense at first. 70k polys isn't alot. However, its still a useful metric. Someone with 100k polys probably has way more materials and toggles and shaders than someone with 20k. - Optimization is not scary. Googling avatar optimization guide brings up dozens of videos and extremely helpful tools - even a guide from VRC themselves - "buh my shield settings"; We have only one custom shield profile. Changing it and other avatar limiter settings every time I visit a crowded event is so annoying. Turning a feature previously manually enforced by moderators or by me tweaking my settings every time I join into something automatic is pretty nice. Plus, not everyone touches all of their settings. I believe @dtupper or someone else at #VRChat mentioned that the setting that allows you to change avatar download prioritization was removed because almost nobody used it. This feature is about convenience for the masses in crowded spaces. Unless you frequently go to these events, it wont affect you. If you do, and you're always in a massive VP avatar, that's inconsiderate.

Avatars and attitudes like this are -exactly- the reason this feature is going to be spectacular. For an avatar with no clothes, the poly count is insane - and *is* a good metric when you consider that in a 40-80 person instance full of "shouldn't be very poor" avatars - you'll end up rendering millions if not tens of millions of polygons. It's not "modern", it's unoptimized - something pretty par for the course from Booth. I've seen models with great detail coming in at 5-10k polygons. -- "Alienating" people "inexperienced with optimization" is such a nothingburger. It's incentive, not alienation. You want people to show your avatar? Learn. Research. Ask questions. Too hard? Use a public model or commission someone. It's greedy to ask other people to suffer for your own laziness. #VRChat

We have finally pushed out an API change that will prevent anyone from uploading a new avatar if they are not using SDK3.9.0 or newer. Please update your SDK! While you will still be able to update old avatars, you will not be able to upload brand new ones - this is due to the changes in avatar ID generation that we described in the Dev Update from August 2025. This is not a removal of avatar uploading capabilities or a restriction; it is just a change in how we generate the data required to upload a new avatar.
