45% of India's GDP is informal. My new paper shows GST's credit mechanism is pulling firms into the formal economy, not through enforcement but because every buyer demands an invoice from the supplier behind it. Formalisation cascading begins with large firms and grows upstream

Global Capability Centres are projected to contribute to 3.5% of India's GDP. My new paper argues that GCCs are firm-level reorganisation at the global scale: only the most productive firms set up GCCs, trading off lower wages against higher coordination costs of remote work.

new blog post at @Ideas4India 45% of India’s manufacturing is informal. My work shows GST is slowly changing this: an input credit system creates a formalisation cascade where firms demand invoices from suppliers & this pulls the entire supply chain slowly into the formal economy
Ideas for India@Ideas4India

Value-added tax has a self-enforcing design that generates formalisation cascades through supply chains. Using @_CMIE Prowess data on 12,024 firms for the period 2013-2022, Megha Patnaik @megonomista examines impact of India’s introduction of GST in 2017 ideasforindia.in/topics/macroec…

Thrilled to share our paper on Sustainable Remote Workplaces (with @BeataJechorek , @asdurso & @ChloeThurstonDC ) is forthcoming in JSIS. We show employees evaluate remote work as bundles of trade-offs: flexibility, pay, monitoring, & costs are considered jointly #FutureOfWork

One cannot ignore the level playing field argument and comparative lower costs in exporting countries which gives them an unfair advantage. Our industry are wealth and job creators, also. @bc_cuts @amol_kulkarni1 @sharma_navneet @IlaPatnaik @surjitbhalla @dravirmani @AMS_Shardul

#import #duties especially those on common industrial inputs eg #Steel, textile fibres penalise #households and downstream #Industries , more so in times of high inflation, but they continue as they enrich a select few of large raw material processors @APanagariya @Psm_cuts
