One thing people never seem to take into account when they conclude housing was cheaper in the "good old days" is that our expectations are now orders of magnitude higher than they used to be. If you compare the much, much smaller amount people made in 1960 to what people make today in real dollars, housing costs per square foot as a percentage of our incomes have dramatically dropped. The difference is that the average house size today is TWICE AS BIG as it was in 1960 and comes with a lot more amenities. My widowed grandmother's house didn't even have a bathroom in it until she got remarried and her new husband built one for her. Basically, people are imagining that previous generations lived in houses as big as we have today and for the most part, they didn't even come close. The same thing goes with one income supporting a family. It still can. The difference is that they lived in a way that we'd consider "slumming it" today. We're not wearing patched clothes, growing our own vegetables, and never going out to eat. "Oh, everything is so bad today." Not at all.
