🚨 GLASGOW SLAMS DOOR ON SCOTS REGIMENT AS SNP AND GREENS BLOCK FREEDOM OF THE CITY HONOUR Glasgow has become the first council in Scotland to refuse the Freedom of the City to the Royal Regiment of Scotland after SNP and Scottish Green councillors voted down a motion marking the regiment’s 20th anniversary. The proposal, brought forward by Glasgow Labour councillor James Adams, sought to recognise the service and sacrifice of the regiment and the city’s longstanding links to the Armed Forces. More than 20 local authorities across Scotland, including Edinburgh and Aberdeen, have already granted the honour to the regiment. Glasgow City Council is now the first to reject it. The SNP Glasgow Group reportedly described granting the honour as “inherently problematic”, prompting fury from opposition councillors who accused the administration of turning its back on servicemen and women. James Adams said the decision left Glasgow “completely out of step” with the rest of the country and broke with generations of civic tradition recognising military service. “It is frankly shameful that the SNP and Greens chose to block this honour for the Royal Regiment of Scotland in its 20th anniversary year,” he said. “This was a chance for Glasgow to stand united in recognising the courage, sacrifice and service of the men and women who have served our country, including many with deep links to this city. Instead, the SNP and Greens turned their backs on them.” Adams said there was “no credible reason” to deny the honour to the regiment, describing the Freedom of the City as one of the highest civic distinctions that can be awarded. “At a time when servicemen and servicewomen continue to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our country and support communities at home and abroad, this decision sends entirely the wrong message,” he added. “People across Glasgow will be asking why the SNP and Greens could not bring themselves to support what should have been a simple, respectful and unifying gesture.” The Royal Regiment of Scotland was formed in 2006 and serves as the senior line infantry regiment of the British Army in Scotland, with battalions recruited from communities across the country. The row comes amid growing political division over how Scotland’s military history and serving personnel are recognised in civic life, particularly in councils controlled by nationalist and Green administrations.
