What people like @Qwik don't understand and probably will never understand is that there's a difference between artists and creators that actually build something and executives that then exploit those creations for short term profits. Mike Ybarra couldn't have done to Diablo what he did if it wouldn't have been for folks like Brevik who made Diablo what it is in the first place. It doesn't take creativity or skill to take a franchise that's beloved by fans and has tons of nostalgia value cause it was actually built on greatness and to turn that into a casino to rip people off. It just takes shamelessness and greed. But the inherent issue there is that this is very much a short-term strategy. Yes, you'll make a lot of money in the short-term from people who grew up and loved those franchises, because they'll get the new version mostly because they loved the old version in the hopes that they get the same kinda experience again that they once cherished. But then they try your new thing and they'll certainly not leave with the same amazement and love that they felt before. Instead, they'll understand that you're ripping them off and they'll never buy another game from you again. And what do you then, once you exploited and burned all the franchises that you own? 🤔 So there's a major difference between the creatives who build a billion dollar IP because of the passion and love they put into the work and executives who then take over and exploit those IPs in the most shameless way possible like what we've seen through Diablo Immortal and 'Please spend 65$ on this horse-skin' Diablo IV. This is a problem we're seeing all over in the games industry. The people who once worked in small offices, happy to push genre conventions and giving their best to create something that's truly fun at some point all sold out and now everyone's cashing in on nostalgia. But... what is your long-term goal here? Because at some point, you'll have burned all the bridges.
