In 2014, a father in a Dutch courtroom threw a chair at the judge after the driver who killed his two-year-old daughter and her grandparents was sentenced to just 120 hours of community service. The unusually light penalty for the triple fatality triggered widespread international outrage. Although the father was quickly restrained, authorities ultimately decided not to charge him, taking into account the extreme emotional circumstances.
Following the public backlash, the case was appealed. The original ruling was overturned, and the driverโs sentence was significantly increased to 15 months in prison and a four-year driving ban. The appellate court ruled that the driverโs excessive speed reflected a higher degree of negligence than the lower court had determined.
