Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀 Intrepid visited Ireland in September 1957. Crew members enjoyed exploring local sites and welcoming visitors to the ship. According to Mr. Gardner’s first wife, sailors in Gardner’s division pierced their ears with four-leaf clover earrings for good luck before the attack on Truk during World War II.

100 years ago, Robert H. Goddard launched the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket from a farm in Auburn, Massachusetts, changing flight forever. 🚀 By introducing steering and stabilization systems, he made rockets capable of flying higher and farther. His work helped power the Space Age and made spacecraft like Space Shuttle Enterprise, the world’s first space shuttle, possible. Visitors can stand beneath Enterprise inside the Intrepid Museum's Space Shuttle Pavilion and see how that first launch propelled humanity into space. Photos courtesy of the U.S. Air Force

With the onset of the Cold War, the Navy modernized its carriers and their equipment to meet new challenges and stay on the cutting edge of technological advancement. Helmets like the H-4 Flight Helmet were designed to be rigid for pilot protection during ejection. Its striking gold color was standard issue for many U.S. Navy helmets of the 1950s and 1960s. The APH-6A Flight Helmet of the 1960s came equipped with not one, but two visors—both tinted and clear, that could be worn depending on light conditions. Come enjoy these helmets, along with other artifacts, on display at the Museum!

Toothache at sea? Intrepid’s dental department had you covered! 🦷⚓ From routine exams to root canals, dentures, and even custom mouthguards for the ship’s boxers, the dental department stayed busy, treating thousands of sailors a year.

During Women’s History Month, the Intrepid Museum honors the women of the U.S. Navy. Before women were permitted to serve on board Navy ships, families of Navy personnel weathered unpredictable absences and built communities of their own. While Growler was on patrol and communication was limited, the women at home leaned on one another for strength and support. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM

Join the Navy and see the world. Cornelius Brown’s submarine journey took him from the USS Redfin to USS Archerfish and finally to USS Growler, which is open for visitors to explore at the Intrepid Museum!

Three Fairbanks-Morse engines powered the submarine Growler. These experimental engines were trouble from the start. Growler's engineering crew was plagued by cracked pistons, blown gaskets and leaky nozzles. These photographs show a 1962 engine replacement.

The Sørlandet, a 1927 Norwegian heritage vessel and the world’s oldest operating full-rigged tall ship, has arrived at Pier 86 at the Intrepid Museum! 🇳🇴 Step aboard from Saturday, February 28 through Wednesday, March 11 with a free Pier Pass from the Intrepid Museum entrance and experience nearly a century of maritime history up close.
