Honestly, it’s not even about the Ballon d’Or. The level at which Rodri is playing is something Busquets never reached. The level of influence Rodri has on game, Busquet never touched this level.
Rodri is the complete package. His influence on every phase of the game is on another level. Busquets was an elite defensive midfielder, no doubt, but I don’t think he ever controlled football matches the way Rodri does today.
At no point in his career would I say Busquets was the best midfielder in the world. He was the perfect glue in arguably the greatest midfield ever, with Xavi and Iniesta. His job was to give them balance, protect transitions, recycle possession, and make everything flow. He mastered that role.
Rodri is different.
Rodri is the balance and the midfield. That’s two completely different things. He’s much more than just a player who holds the team together.
He dictates the tempo, progresses the ball, breaks opposition lines with his passing, scores crucial goals, dominates aerially, wins duels, controls transitions, and is the tactical reference for both club and country. When Rodri is missing, the entire identity of the team changes. We’ve seen it with both Man City and Spain.
Busquets complemented two of the greatest midfielders ever. Rodri is the midfielder everyone else plays around. That’s the difference.
Don’t forget Rodri’s physical dominance. He’s stronger in duels, more athletic, more of a goal threat, and offers far more in both penalty boxes. Defensively, he’s elite. On the ball, he’s elite. Mentally, he’s elite. It’s difficult to find a real weakness in his game.
Busquets is one of the greatest defensive midfielders in football history, and his legacy is untouchable. But if we’re talking about who has the higher peak and who is the more complete footballer, I’m taking Rodri every single time.
For me, Rodri has redefined what a modern defensive midfielder can be. He isn’t just the player who gives the midfield balance, he is the midfield.
Rodri > Busquet. Unless you’re using Nostalgia to talk ball.
