@McDougallYYC Happy to see you post this, could do without the “sovereign Alberta within a united Canada” jargon We’ve heard too much from Smith. Shouldn’t all the provinces be sovereign within a united Canada? What makes us so special in AB that we require this distinction?

Jason Kenney continues to be one of the most clear-headed pro-Canada voices out there. He and I were on different sides, but I have deep respect for his love for our country and his unflinching approach to taking down the simplistic arguments of Alberta separatists #ableg 🇨🇦
Jason Kenney 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇮🇱@jkenney

Of course it would not be in the commercial interests of the federal government to suspend shipments on Trans Mountain (TM.) But that’s not the point. The point is that in a worse case scenario, such as an Alberta unilateral declaration of independence (UDI,) Canada would have enormous leverage, including the ability to block Alberta energy exports. This is most obviously the case re: federally-owned TM. Apart from their ability to reduce or stop shipments, do you really think the federal or BC governments would continue to advance Trans Mountain optimization, which is currently the best bet that we have for increased egress? Do you really think the federal government would maintain its MOU commitment to support the construction of a de novo West Coast pipeline? Even if it wanted to, federal paramountcy over interprovincial pipelines, grounded in 92(10)(a) would cease to exist following secession, so BC governments could find ways to block operation or construction of pipelines going through their territory, with Alberta having no recourse to Ottawa. Currently all of our pipelines exports to the US pass through other Canadian provinces first. That includes the incomplete KXL route, which passes through Saskatchewan. Since the Republic of Alberta would be starting without an equivalent to the 1977 Canada-U.S. Transit Pipelines Treaty, Ottawa could also suspend the operation of those other pipelines, e.g. the Enbridge Mainline. Canada and BC could also extract further concessions (eg tolls or tariffs) in order to allow Alberta natural gas to feed into the growing number of West Coast LNG terminals. Separatists respond to these realities by saying “don’t worry - we’ll build pipelines to the US and export from there!” First of all, who is “we?” What companies are going to risk tens of $ billions to spend years building a new system of pipelines in the midst of such massive political and legal uncertainty, including the risk of a Biden style abrogation of pipeline permits by the US? Secondly, the separatists seem completely unaware that the left wing US West Coast governments have effectively blocked the export of carbon intensive fuels from their ports. That’s why US produced thermal coal is exported from the Port of Vancouver, BC. Strange but true: Canada’s West Coast ports are far friendlier to hydro carbon exports than West Coast US ports! All of this (and much more) effectively gives Ottawa the clear upper hand in prospective negotiations over everything, e.g.: -debt allocation; - valuation & sale of federal assets (such as military bases, RCMP facilities, federal lands, including airports, etc.;) - allocation of CPP assets; - continuation of OAS / GIS benefits; - termination of citizenship; - visa and work permit exemptions for Albertans travelling to Canada; - export access to the Canadian market; - partition of Alberta per the predictable demands of democratic majorities in Edmonton, Calgary, Indian Reserves & elsewhere;) - support for or blockage of Alberta’s accession to critical international bodies & treaties, like CUSMA, or IATA to allow for international flights, etc.; and - countless other issues. I agree that exercising its massive leverage in such a scenario would be damaging to Canada. But it would be far more damaging to Alberta. Whatever grievances Albertans have with Ottawa cannot be remedied by becoming a landlocked statelet. The vast majority of Albertans know this. It is beyond absurd that we are going to spend the next several months, and possibly years to come, arguing endlessly over this.

Being Stoned While Neurodivergent Is Not What You Think🙄 So I see a bunch of people attacking me and my legitimate question about being stoned and parallels with dementia, especially early dementia. Y’all really think this is a joke? Y’all really think marijuana and being stoned is only for fun? Y’all couldn’t be more wrong. Let me explain why. First, I am AuDHD. ADHD overlapping with autistic traits, Asperger’s to be exact. I see the world differently than most people. My brain and nervous system are wired differently. Most of the time I literally don’t remember huge chunks of my life unless something refreshes my memory. I don’t remember names well, only faces. I can forget entire events or years until someone asks the right question and suddenly I remember everything in insane detail. But overall, unless my brain is deeply interested in something, it often simply doesn’t stay in my active memory. Dementia is a terrible disease and I feel genuinely sorry for people suffering from it. My wife literally works with people with dementia, helping them live their last months and years with as little pain and confusion as possible. I have also been interested in cognitive science, memory, personality disorders and the nervous system for years because people I love suffer from disorders that also affect memory, perception and emotional regulation. So before people instantly judge me, maybe try to actually understand the context first. Now let’s talk about marijuana. People often think weed is just: “LOL bro, get high and have fun.” For me it was never like that. The first time I got seriously stoned in my life, I went into absolute panic for hours. Pure terror. My thoughts multiplied into infinity. My nervous system completely overloaded. The experience was so intense that I avoided weed for years afterward because I hated how powerful it felt. Why? Because neurodivergent people often experience substances very differently and much more intensely than most people. What feels “relaxing” to one person can feel psychologically nuclear to somebody whose brain already runs at full speed 24/7. Only in the last few years did I learn how to use marijuana responsibly from time to time. Ironically, I usually can’t smoke fully sober because the intensity becomes too much. But if I’m slightly buzzed first, marijuana suddenly slows my brain down instead of sending it into panic. And when that happens, something strange but very real occurs: my mind finally rests. Not completely. Never completely. But enough to calm the constant racing thoughts, patterns, connections, noise and mental overstimulation that never really stop in my head, even in dreams. And yes, the next day I often wake up calmer and more mentally organized. It genuinely helps me process things differently and put certain thoughts together. That’s why I asked the dementia question while I was stoned and talking to my wife. Not to mock dementia. Not to make fun of suffering. Not to be edgy. I was genuinely curious whether certain aspects of altered perception, memory fragmentation and cognitive confusion can feel subjectively similar in some ways, especially in early cognitive decline. That is a legitimate question. But many people today instantly flatten everything into outrage and offense instead of trying to understand the actual meaning behind the question. That’s what I call 2D thinking. People hear one sentence, remove all context, simplify it into something offensive, and then attack the simplified version they created themselves. Meanwhile the actual discussion was about cognition, memory, consciousness, neurodivergence and altered mental states.

Your case for Canada boils susbtantively down to: - a trade agreement with all other G7 members - we can get help during wildfires - divorce is bad - good vibes being in the family And on the World Happiness Report, Canada ranks 25th - down from 5th in 2015. Trudeau did that. Your PM has his work cut out for him. Please let others make the case for Canada, Corey. Yours is thin gruel.

@DavidColetto I’d like to see polling (maybe already done?) to determine if the separatists win, how many want to join the US, and how many don’t? And, would they be for separation if it meant joining the US? I believe, if they successfully separate, this will just be the next battle.

I’m increasingly convinced that it will be very difficult for the UCP to remain united as a party that has 50% federalists/50% separatists. PC + Wildrose is one thing. Separatist + federalist is another. Even if a referendum fails, which it will, the goal of independence will go on and there’s now an organized group that a referendum will only fuel and help grow. #ableg will be forever changed and I can’t see how there won’t be a fully organized separatist party in AB.

Checking in on CNN NewsNight, we have a failed Texas House Democrat candidate Isaiah Martin LAUGHING after saying, “The economy sucks. Like the vast majority of Albertans, I’m both a proud Canadian, and a proud Albertan. We are a smart, hard working, innovative and loyal people. Those who went before us built one of the most prosperous and generous societies on Earth. And we’re not going to let anyone tear apart our home, the true North strong and free. It’s time to fight for our country. Alberta: let’s lead, not leave. votetostay.ca/about/

Voting on whether to have a vote is a ridiculous lack of provincial leadership. Calgary is a globally connected city. Separation uncertainty is costing us jobs. We have real work to do: building homes, improving public safety, fixing infrastructure, growing our economy, and making life better.

Regarding yesterday’s speech by the Premier: 1. For those Albertans wanting a binding separation referendum in October; due to the recent court ruling, there is no legal way to hold a binding separation referendum this fall. If the simplified and binding stay/leave question had been put on the ballot it would have been struck down within a couple of weeks - and Elections Alberta would have been legally barred from including the question on the referendum in October entirely. It may take a year or more to appeal and reverse the judge’s erroneous decision, and until then, a binding referendum held by Elections Alberta is not legally or practically possible. You don’t have to agree with the court’s decision (I sure don’t) but that’s how our justice system works. 2. For those Albertans who don’t want a referendum at all; 700,000 Albertans signed a petition asking for a referendum on this issue and Premier Smith rightfully wants to get direction from all Albertans on this matter now - not 3 years from now. It’s time for Albertans to decide whether we want to spend time, expense and effort pursuing separation or whether Albertans want to remain, continue to work on undoing the last 10 years of horrendous Trudeau-era policies and fight for a stronger Alberta within a united Canada. We will find out on Oct 19. You will decide. Not politicians, social media clickbait farmers or media talking heads. You. That’s democracy and it’s a beautiful thing that we have it here. Again, the choice is simple. Either: 1. Vote to remain in Canada, put an end to this debate, and fight to make our province and country stronger and more unified; or 2. Vote to commence the necessary, albeit lengthy legal processes, appeals, and other steps needed to legally separate from Canada (including a binding referendum that complies with the Constitution). The choice is ours Alberta. You know where the Premier stands on this question. She made herself clear and gave her reasons why she believes Alberta remaining in Canada is worth supporting and fighting for. But what do Albertans want the next step to be? Let’s all vote on October 19, get marching orders from all Albertans and move forward with the result.
