@slmandel @Greg_Russo Not many guys coaching in the CFP championship then in the Super Bowl….Chris is elite. Sometimes God denies you smaller blessings for bigger ones.

In 2023, Michigan fired assistant Chris Partridge in-season for allegedly telling a player to lie to the NCAA. He was ultimately vindicated in the final report, but he never got a national title ring. On Sunday, he will coach in the Super Bowl. nytimes.com/athletic/70257…

@SpielbergerBrad Some deals intending/“contracted” to deliver NIL compensation by Jan. 31st could be exposing players and program to liability. Messy and unprofessiona system.

@JTERogan Yup. Rule changes happening on Jan 10 mid-portal was a fun wrinkle during active negotiations too, good system

@BigFresh Not every school, but certainly at some schools where they need to stretch their $ or they are okay taking advantage of their kids. It’s a results-based business so I understand it, but it’s disingenuous.

@JTERogan Genuine question for clarity: under NCAA bylaws, room & board is part of the athletics grant-in-aid. Are you saying some schools are reducing that aid and replacing housing support with NIL/rev share, or is this about additional money on top of the scholarship?

I haven't heard athletes calling the portal the "wild, wild west", but money previously given to athletes for housing is being siphoned out of their scholarship & called NIL/rev share at schools. Coaches make $ offers then pull them. I could name names, and might if it keeps on.

@BigFresh 91% of schools under report or don’t report cost of attendance. So start there. Then, most players want to live off campus, so they get ~$10k as “NIL” that was previously an untaxed housing stipend from the school. Now it’s a taxable NIL payment. Better optics for the program.

@TheDukeofKewpie Players do honor contracts. Mensah and Williams tried not to, and ultimately were held to the terms…excessively penal contract terms like owing unpaid funds back to the school or having 1/2 of their earnings (NIL) being speculative/non-guaranteed…School still hold the cards.

@JTERogan Honestly, who cares. When players can decide to not honor contracts I have no problem with schools acting the same foolish way. That knife cuts both ways.

@JTERogan If you’re trying to get sympathy from the fans for the plight of the players, the coaches, the schools, the agents, the collectives, the conferences, the TV networks, and any of the high flying admin types (eg CFP committee) then you’ve come to the wrong place my friend.

@kwmcnamee Reconstructed* …cost of attendance is VERY fluid so they can get creative with the accounting and distribution terms.

@RulingSports This being the first portal cycle having to balance rev share and NIL, I’m inclined to give grace. But I’m mentioning it broadly to let people know I won’t stand for it going forward. And if I hear of repeat offenders, you’ll hear from me.

Help athletes; name the names. So long as the NCAA refuses to collectively bargain, bad actors not upholding the terms of contracts or dealing in bad faith need to be outed (or sued).

@ed_waz Wasting time, and worst of all, opportunity. Fully agree. Get ‘em to campus and lowball them. Loudly signals character and intent of the program.

@DylanOlive_UF D1 LB, Coach still has that power. He'll win fast there. No fear based recruiting mindset from him. He told me at Troy that he'll invite other coaches from the conference to his camps. If Troy couldn't win recruits at their own camps then they have bigger problems!

Multiple recruits have mentioned the “energy” of the new Gators staff after spending the weekend in Gainesville. Jon Sumrall’s reaction to his first ‘27 commitment is evidence of why⬇️

The recalculated cap will rise to ~$50 mill in 2 years based on average P4 revenue projections following massive CFP growth and new TV contracts since last cap calculation. 7 months in feels a little early to be abandoning the revenue sharing era…And then what would replace it?
Ross Dellenger@RossDellenger

Radakovich believes that an uncapped market would mean $35-40 million football rosters that, in two years, may reach the $50 million mark. Wouldn’t this mean that the wealthiest programs could just out-spend all others? Radakovich: “Aren’t they now?” bit.ly/49Z6nOd

1000%. He’ll win and develop talent to go and get paid elsewhere. Don’t ask what his rate is to work with pros… 😱 Big NIL checks probably wouldn’t cover a year of skill development and learning in Earl’s program. And he would likely stay at UMKC with few exceptions…
Ryan Silver@RyanSilver1

Coach Earl Watson would be an excellent choice as new Head Coach at UMKC. NBA Head Coach experience, connected throughout the country, great passion, beloved by former players. Has given back to Los Angeles and Kansas City communities. Great Coach, leader and program builder.

@TJA4Michigan Where do the most capable fundraisers and leaders work? Not in athletics. So to entrust them with influence and control of crucial capital decisions at this juncture is an awful idea. Maybe things weren’t so bad in the donor funded, pre rev-share era…

My primary objection to PE-Athletics deals is a lack of confidence in athletics leadership’s ability to strategically deploy windfall amounts. Why on earth would these people be trusted to not squander or self enrich? Madness.
Bill Wilson@Scamateurism

Todd, I agree; in fact, I've wondered whether, if the recent flirtations with PE firms come to some significant fruition, the PE guys will insist on deploying one of PE's primary tools (cut employee #s & costs), to produce something like the result you're talking about
